Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Camps, Down Syndrome, Health, Human Service Organizations, Human Services, Sports

Mission: Camp Horizons was founded in 1979 by two special education teachers because parents asked for a summer camp for their handicapped child just like those available to their non-handicapped siblings. We have a reputation for team building, positive programs and being able to serve individuals who have been "kicked out" or denied services elsewhere because of their challenging behavioral concerns or unusual medical conditions. We know what we do works. We have grown steadily over the past 26 years and our only form of advertising is word of mouth. Camp Horizons now provides much more than summer camping.

The time I spent volunteering at Horizons WCSU has been, without a doubt, the most rewarding experience I can recollect. While financially I am not in a position to contribute, I offered a donation of my time over the past 2 years.

Horizons at Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) is committed to changing the outcomes for low-income children in Danbury, CT by providing a comprehensive summer enrichment program and school year events that inspire students to reach their full potential. For 6 weeks each summer, students enjoy a morning of academics, followed by an afternoon of swimming lessons, music, art and dance. Students return each year until they have completed elementary school. I've learned that all students qualify for the free/reduced lunch program and over 80% are English Language Learners.

I had the opportunity to assist the director and other staff members with transforming college classrooms into early learning centers for their summer program; little tables and chairs, colorful carpets, books, Legos, crayons and pencils-not to forget a few stuffed animals for little ones needing comfort. Within a week, the classrooms were ready to welcome students. I took pride in knowing that I contributed to a safe and educational environment, but was even more touched by the passion and warmth expressed by the program.

Educational and enrichment opportunities were certainly abundant, but the program extends its services to meet individual needs and offer family support. I most recently participated in the program's food drive; collecting items, creating baskets, and delivering to those in need. Once completed, it was on to a book drive to create at home libraries for students. The list goes on and on. It was evident that this program was a heartfelt commitment far beyond a career for the staff members.

Horizons at WCSU not only offers children educational and enrichment opportunities, it provides them with the inspiration, support and encouragement to dream big. Horizons at WCSU would like to increase enrollment in years to come. This is a very deserving organization. As their #GivingDay quote states 'Your 'present' enables their future.'
