Mission: Founded in 1989, hiv law project fights for the rights of the most underserved people living with hiv and aids. Hiv law project believes that all people deserve the same rights, including the right to live with dignity and respect, the right to be treated as equal members of society and the right to have their basic human needs fulfilled. These fundamental rights are often elusive for many people living with hiv/aids. Through innovative legal and advocacy programs, hiv law project partners with clients to fight for those rights.
Programs: Hiv law project provides free civil legal services to hiv-positive residents in manhattan and the bronx through an integrated, general practice service delivery model. Experienced and seasoned legal staff provide clients with a range of legal services, including intake and assessment, advice and consultation, brief service and advocacy, out-of-court settlement negotiations, document preparation, and full representation in court or at administrative hearings. The program handles over 20,000 individual legal cases in a wide range of legal areas, including housing and eviction prevention, immigration law, public and private benefit and health insurance issues, discrimination and hiv-related confidentiality issues, last wills and testaments and advanced planning, debtor/creditor law, and family law issues. Hiv law project serves approximately 1,000 clients each year.
