Mission: The herndon foundation for the cultural arts was created to promote and support the creation of a cultural arts center in downtown herndon, virginia. Our mission is to establish and sustain a permanent arts center through leadership, advocacy, fund raising, programming, policy setting and operation. The herndon arts center will be an iconic gathering place, a centerpiece of the community, with quality art exhibits, performances, activities and educational opportunities supporting excellence and growth in artistic expression while reflecting the interest and needs of the diverse population of the town of herndon, fairfax county and beyond.
Programs: In fiscal year 2014, the herndon foundation for the cultural arts operated and managed artspace herndon, a small arts center in the town of herndon. During the year, 11 exhibitions by a variety of over 150 artists were produced and attended by over 11,000 visitors with accompanying artist receptions and gallery talks; in addition, classes and workshops were offered for youth and adults thoughout the year. We produced or sponsored over 15 public events during the year attended by an estimated 3,000 patrons. Programs were as varied as senior teas for our senior citizens, book looks for young children, design and wine evenings, musical performances and themed movie sing alongs. Our signature events included paint herndon, a day long celebration with arts activities, hands-on-art, live entertainment and an annual painting competition to celebrate the arts. Another community event which we sponsor is our new years eve celebration featuring local entertainers and a community bonfire. In addition, the foundation continues in its efforts to advocate for and raise funds for a permanent arts center that will bring together the visual and performing arts. The foundation also participates in the town's process for developing the downtown area, advising elected officials and developers regarding arts friendly spaces. This year we undertook some special fund raising activities to allow us to build resources to contribute to the future costs of outfitting a herndon arts center. This year we planned and produced the taste of the town event to bring together the local community while enjoying live entertainment, art work, and food from herndon restaurants. We continue to expand our community events to promote the performing arts of music, dance and performance. We undertook a unique service activity to promote local artists, serve local businesses by handling the interchange between artists and the organization to provide local art in their buildings. In total the number of patrons visiting artspace herndon exceeded 14,000 and works by over 300 artists and performers were exhibited or performed.
