Programs: Helping Children Worldwide is transforming communities by serving vulnerable children and families through education, health care, and spiritual mentoring. Since 2000, Helping Children Worldwide has been building sustainable futures for extremely vulnerable children and their families in Sierra Leone, one of the poorest countries in the world. The Child Rescue Centre (CRC) was launched near the end of the ten-year Sierra Leonean civil war as a feeding program for street children who were separated from their families by the violence and chaos of the war. A small, secure building was aquired, and 40 children were rescued from the streets. Staff was hired, and the doors of the CRC officially opened on July 4, 2000. In 2004, the UMC Urban Centre campus launched, and began providing safe housing for up to 70 children who were orphaned, abandoned, or removed from the home by Sierra Leone social services. An additional 100 children were rescued and placed in families with guardians in a program known as the Child Support Program. Today, the need has transitioned away from crisis housing, and the focus has shifted far beyond the walls of the main campus. Now the CRC provides access to education and health care for more than 600 children and youth in Bo, and in villages and communities around the country. We believe that family-based care is at the heart of God’s plan for children. The CRC keeps children connected to their biological or adopted kin, and provides family counseling, education, training, and access to microfinance for parents to lift families out of extreme poverty. Mercy Hospital was founded in response to the desperate need for health care in Sierra Leone. Mercy has been administering quality care in Bo since 2007 and has extended its services via outreach clinics to 55 villages surrounding Bo. When an epidemic level Ebola outbreak devastated the already fragile health care system in 2014, it left women and babies especially vulnerable. Despite the challenges caused by the crisis, Mercy has continued to serve Bo and the surrounding villages, annually providing care to more than 10,000 patients. The hospital has made great strides, earning the trust of the community as a provider of excellent health care for all, regardless of ability to pay. Health care is not free in Sierra Leone, and people are turned away from most hospitals if they cannot afford to pay, but Mercy treats all regardless of their ability to pay. HCW wholeheartedly supports Mercy’s mission to improve infant, child, and maternal health through holistic, community-focused care. We applaud Mercy’s data-driven health care programs, and the focus on professional training and staff development to better serve the Bo community.

Helping Children Worldwide is making a huge difference in the lives of the most vulnerable children and their families in Sierra Leone, and the most important difference they are making is helping kids stay in school, instead of dropping out to work to support their families. I sponsor two teenage girls and often receive updates from them, which assure me that they are making progress and getting an education. They have big goals and dreams!

I've made two trips to Sierra Leone as a volunteer now and have been so impressed with the impact that HCW continues to make. My experiences have been nothing but positive and have contributed to my commitment to this work and the people of Sierra Leone who are supported by HCW. I've enjoyed working with the staff of HCW in preparing for mission trips, and look forward to opportunities to stay involved in the future.

Helping Children Worldwide is doing amazing things in Sierra Leone, Africa, one of the poorest countries in the world, through the Child Rescue Centre and Mercy Hospital. The country is being changed one child at a time. There are now over 600 children in the Child Rescue Centre Program that keeps and supports the children in school as well as providing shelter, food to eat, medical care and spiritual mentoring instead of living on the streets and involved in child labor. The children are staying in school and graduating from high school, university and vocational programs. Mercy hospital was started to provide medical care for all so that preventable illness and deaths can indeed be prevented! My first mission trip to Sierra Leone was in 2008. I will be leaving for my seventh trip this year. I am excited each trip to see the progress in this country, one child at a time! When you donate and support Helping Children Worldwide, your money is going to these programs, bringing hope and a future to a nation.

I am getting ready to take my 3rd trip to Bo, Sierra Leone with Helping Children Worldwide. As a volunteer, I have been able to participate in and witness first-hand the life-saving and life-changing work of HCW in Sierra Leone. When you work with or support HCW, you can be sure that your funds are going exactly where they need to go and the work will be well thought out, intentional and prayed over!

I supported HCW for years based on its mission, and then I took my first trip to Sierra Leone and saw in person the work they support-the CRC and Mercy Hospital. I've been on three trips, the last one a month ago. The work done by our partner, the Sierra Leone united Methodist church, is amazing. With our support they care for children and families in one of the poorest countries. It is a great mission and run with financial integrity. I am blessed to support them with my time and money.

The money goes to the field, directly to helping the people in Sierra Leone -- very limited administrative overhead. They are making such a difference for women and families. Gaining a greater number of successful births, reducing hunger, getting children through school, and supporting the families to ensure success. This successfully brings young people into the economy and increases the contribution to their community. This is the way to break the cycle of poverty. They take the Mercy staff into the villages to reach women, children and families that would have no other access to treatment for malaria, malnutrition and other diseases.
Focusing on the health and education of the women, and surrounding the family to succeed is the key to success for over 17 years.

I first got involved with Helping Children Worldwide (HCW) in December of 2010. That is when, my then 18 year old daughter, asked me to go on a mission trip to Bo, Sierra Leone. (How can a mother refuse when a teenager asks to do something which helps others in one of the poorest countries in the world?). We went to teach Vacation Bible School to about 40 children who were living at the Child Rescue Center (CRC). Some of these children were orphans from the Civil War, and some had been children that were "rescued" from horrible life situations. This trip changed our family's lives.

HCW supports not only the CRC, but also Mercy Hospital. Mercy Hospital treats anyone, regardless of their ability to pay. The staff at HCW works tirelessly to provide the best for those they support in Bo. The organization is transparent, and one can be assured that every dollar that is donated or raised for HCW is used for transforming lives in Sierra Leone.

Fast forward 7 1/2 years. My daughter is now employed by HCW, and has been living and working in Bo, Sierra Leone...a journey that started with that December, 2010 mission trip. If you want to make a difference in lives in a place such as Bo Sierra Leone, be assured that by getting involved with or donating to HCW, you WILL make that difference!

I've been a volunteer with Helping Children Worldwide for a number of years. The work of HCW impacts lives in tangible ways. From offering free hospital care and supporting children and families, to providing micro-financing so that folks in the local community can start a business--HCW's mission is to serve and support vulnerable populations and they do an amazing job. I'm so grateful for the work that HCW does in Sierra Leone.

I have been donating to Helping Children worldwide for 12 years because of their integrity of funds- money goes to serve the programs and people they support. They have a strong relationship with their in country partner and really care about the people in need. They are small enough to be directly involved in the work. Its a great group of people who are passionate about what they do.

Helping Children Worldwide is an amazing organization that reaches out to children where they are and, with the help of their supporters, gives them the tools to learn, grow, and improve both their life circumstances and their communities. I am a proud supporter!

As a volunteer researcher and donor, I have seen the drastic reduction in avaiable grants and size of individual donations in this economy. I feel that HCW, C4H and their supported nonprofits use every penny received to directly support or to develop partnerships to support their clients. Under HCW Mercy Hospital saw a 28% increase in patient admissions this year. Their maternity services and services to children expanded. 116 babies were delivered. Their community education programs reached 240 people. As the purpose and mission of the Child Rescue Centre continues to develop and expand to include child labor and victims of human trafficking, over 250 kids have been impacted by their programs. They offered residential support, community support, post secondary education and foster care to over 465 kids. They have the capacity to handle more incoming with a new prescriptive vision for their special needs.

Our family has supported HCW for many years as both donors and volunteers. We believe in their mission, have seen them meet goals successfully, watched them sustain and grow their programs, assisted with their fundraising plan, and know that almost all money received goes directly into programs. This charity is one that we ask others to donate to in our honor instead of birthday or holiday gifts as alternative giving. We believe that the Board and staff do an admirable job of sustaining and expanding their mission, recruiting new partnerships, and using their resources effectively and efficiently. Their volunteers are dedicated, highly skilled and professionally matched to the project tasks.

I am currently a volunteer with HCW and was also on the Board of Directors. In addition to my service on the Board, I have traveled to Sierra Leone three times to provide oversight for HCW's projects there and to help build the capacity of the professional staff that our Sierra Leonean partners employ. I am very impressed with HCW's management and oversight of the funds it raises. I believe it is a very cost-effective non-profit and that's why my family and I are glad to donate to HCW to help support its life-saving and life-changing work.

I've gone from a passive donor at church to an active member of the Board, and the more I learn about our work the more committed I becoming to seeing it expand and grow. The vision of a single United Methodist Church with a desire to help orphans in a country torn by civil war has grown into HCW, with its increasing network of partners and an expanding vision to help children and their families both domestically and internationally. The African Programs are doing amazing work to combat maternal and infant mortality and rescue children, limited only by resources. The Connection 4 Hope concept may someday be the model for non-profits to join together to provide services to the poor in a holistic, synergetic way. I can see the direct results of my time and financial support and know it is making a difference in the lives of children.

Helping Children Worldwide is an AWESOME organization that does exactly what it says it does....help children. As a kindergarten teacher myself and as a mother and grandmother, nothing has been more importnant in my own life than children and their welfare. That is why I feel HCW is a stellar organization to carry on the work I feel is important. Their principles are sound and the investment is sure.

I've seen first-hand the results of HCW's work, its demonstrable value, and most importantly, the return on donors’ investments. HCW uses a balanced, holistic approach in addressing basic human needs, and in its work to relieve human pain and suffering. In a very focused manner, it helps those abandoned and hurting, whether it’s the orphan from a tragic civil war, a new born or the new mother facing one of the highest mortality rates in the world, or a child who lacks the necessary vocational skills or formal education necessary to escape from a future that promises only more poverty, pain, and suffering. From end-to-end and top to bottom, HCW as an organization is accountable, transparent, and effective in its delivery of life-saving, life-enhancing, and life-sustaining services. HCW’s organizational DNA is unique, and is what distinguishes it from other organizations. Composed of life-changing eternal values and principles, HCW’s DNA reflects the best that humankind has to offer.

Helping Children Worldwide does exactly what is implied in the name. It's resources are used to share love, care and compassion to those in need stretching to the far corners of the Earth. I am a nurse and have traveled and served with this organization. I have had the opportunity to give immunizations, provide "urgent care" services as part of a medical team, and am about to see first hand the progress of their hospital, orphanage, nutrition program and other programs as I travel back to Africa. (This is my fourth trip.) I always look forward to volunteering my time and resources to such a dedicated non-profit.
