Mission: To establish, promote, and fund programs that teach healthy communications within families, and help to end the cycle of violence and abuse by empowering children and young adults with the knowledge, skills and confidence to lead healthy and productive lives.
Programs: The sticks & stones school-based counseling program provides children with the tools that are necessary to cope with trauma. The program consists of 10 weekly meetings, with small groups of children, where they learn healthy ways to express their feelings, alternatives to violence and are taught how to stay safe in violent situations. We are currently serving approximately 1,500 students in 42 schools throughout monterey county. To date we have served over 12,000 children in the sticks & stones counseling program.
the bullying prevention program is a school and community wide program which is currently serving over 8,000 children, teachers, non-teaching staff (i. E. Bus drivers, yard duty, cafeteria staff, janitors, etc. ), administrators, parents and community partners. The goals of the program are to reduce existing bullying problems among students, to prevent the development of new problems and to achieve better peer relations at school. In 2017, we have expanded from 4 to 11 schools and in 2018 we will have bullying prevention in 13-15 schools. By 2018, over 11,000 children, school personnel, parents and siblings will be positively impacted by this program. We will continue to expand this program as other schools and districts recognize the benefits of changing the climate and culture of a school. Our goal is to support every child in feeling safe at school.
the teen program helps youth in our community who are the highest at-risk for future incarceration. We provide a more intensive therapeutic intervention for these extremely traumatized high school aged youth. The youth programs include services throughout the school year during high school and then a summer camp is offered, taking the therapeutic work to a deeper level. The youth we serve are ethnically diverse teenage boys and girls who are being guided to envision the possibilities and opportunities that they can experience in their lives. They are encouraged to look at the choices they make today and how those choices will affect their future.
