Mission: The greenbelt, the second largest of new york city's flagship parks, consists of over 2,800 acres of public and private land (greater than the combined acerage of central park and prospect park) in the center of staten island, and includes natural areas and traditional parks. The greenbelt conservancy is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1989 that works in partnership with the new york city department of parks and recreation (parks and recreation) to support the operation, administration, and public use of the greenbelt's city parkland. The conservancy promotes conservation and enhancement through public awareness, support, and enjoyment of its resources. The conservancy is also responsible for the prudent management of its resources to benefit the greenbelt.
Programs: To sponsor and provide educational programs for adults and students relating to natural history, conservation and earth sciences.
the visitor center is a hub for greenbelt educational and recreational activities and programs. Visitors can obtain a trail map and access the greenbelt's trail system, sign up for programs and activities, speak with a greenbelt representative, or just relax and enjoy the beautiful wooded grounds.
since 1999 the carousel has been bringing old-fashioned fun back to staten island. The carousel was built in willowbrook to enhance the park and increase visitor numbers at the northern access point of the greenbelt.
