Causes: Economic Development
Mission: The mission of the greater charlottesville area development corporation (gcadc) is to help families achieve self-sufficiency by identifying and helping create jobs within their reach, and positioning them to secure and excel in those jobs -- real jobs for real people. Gcadc's approach is to amplify the effects of the region's extensive support services and economic power by deploying existing social networks to connect those resources more directly to the families struggling in the charlottesville region.
Programs: In 2017, the charlottesville works initiative (cwi) used neighborhood-based peers (individuals in the community who are well-respected and well-connected) to recruit and support 172 low-income individuals to help them secure jobs that would allow them to become self-sufficient. Of the 91 who had completed training, 80 (88%) had gotten jobs. 66% of those jobs paid $25,000 or more. 41% of those job-seekers were single mothers. Cwi worked with community partners to provide childcare, transportation, literacy training, housing and financial support for these individuals. In 2017, cwi launched a fleet of 9 loaner vehicles. The vehicles are lent to job-seekers for up to 5 months, to provide transportation during training and the first months of employment. Once gainfully employed and able to purchase their own vehicle, the job-seeker return the vehicle for the next job-seeker to use. Cwi also runs the pathways fund. The fund provides one-time financial support of up to $800 to help individuals remain on a pathway to self-sufficiency. Funds are used to pay for items such as rent, utilities or car repairs that are necessary for people to keep a job or remain independent. In 2017, the fund provided direct assistance to 44 individuals. The bulk of the funds were used to help people make a rent payment to keep them in their homes.
