Mission: Global connections for change (gcc) a charitable organization whose mission is to combat disparities in health, education, economy, and social structures through community action and empowerment. Since inception, it has worked with hiv/aids education in durham, nc and moshi, tanzania and in 2011 expanded its programming to a rural village in guatemala.
Programs: In accordance with gcc's mission and as approved by gcc's board of directors, gcc focused 100% of its funding in 2011 to the mayan empowerment project in a rural village in guatemala. As a result of the $4,100 contribution, the rural village of canilla, guatemala was able to build the country's first mayan educational center made with recycled materials. Over 1,000 primary school students learned about recycling and helped create over 5,000 ecobricks. The mayan educational center was inaugurated in april of 2012. The educational center serves as a hub for indigenous leaders to teach workshops focusing on youth development, women's health, and conflict resolution. On average, the educational center receives 75-150 visitors a month who benefit from the center's services.
