Mission: Girls rock philly is a volunteer-based non-profit music and mentoring organization dedicated to empowering girls and young women from the greater philadelphia region through music education and activities that foster leadership skills, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. At girls rock philly, we provide a community driven response that is dedicated to identifying and deconstructing gender-based oppression while addressing the ways it manifests itself in female socialized and/or identified youth: behaviours such as competitiveness, self-doubt, and negative self-image. We use supportive, multi-generational, peer mentoring model. This model works to create a safer space that encourages the fearless expression, artistic experimentation, thoughtful analysis, and imaginative action of our participants.
Programs: Girls rock philly is dedicated to diversity and ensures that at least 50% of campers are low-income by providing full and partial scholarships to campers based on income need. In addition, roughly 70% of each camp class was african-american, with geographic representation including many sections of philadelphia, the 4 countyarea, and southern new jersey. Our camp is held at mastery charter school thomas campus, which offers week-long use of its secure school facilities at a reduced rate, thus assuring that a majority of funds raised by girls rock philly can directly support programming.
