the Gila Herd is part of the Hallelujah rescue of almost 1000 horses, who were saved by a few hardy souls who worked their bodies to the bone to find homes for all. I sponser two wild mustangs from the huge group, and applaud the work done to save them all
Barbara Rasmussen, Gila Herd Foundation of Arizona's director, was a great help during Fleet of Angels' now-famous Hallelujah Horses mission, which saved the lives of 907 mustangs seized by SD officials- who almost immediately put the horses at great risk of being slaughtered. The HH mission is considered the largest rescue of horses in history. Not only did Barbara spend months away from home to help photograph and document the situation at the failed sanctuary, she reviewed almost 1000 adoption applications submitted to FOA and provided meaningful emotional support to the rest of the Fleet of Angels team for over a year and a half. Additionally, in her efforts to create a safe haven for several of the Hallelujah Horses from the treasured Gila herd, Barbara formed this foundation, which took the horses she adopted back to their native state of AZ so they could gain back their health before rejoining their herd at their new sanctuary in CA.
The Gila Foundation has also assisted with fundraising, awareness building, and organizing efforts for several other groups of mustangs who were at risk and needed safe placement.
Fleet of Angels loves Barbara Rasmussen and supports efforts of the Gila Foundation of Arizona.
This foundation is an awesome foundation for the Gila Herd. This herd was part of a non-profit that had a horrible reputation for sick and dying horses. When I saw the Gila herd with Barbara, we both cried. These poor sweet animals had their rib cages showing, their hooves were not being trimmed, and each one needed dire medical treatments. Barbara, with the help of some wonderful horse lovers, were able to transport the herd, feed them, and get them to greener grasses in California. It is an ongoing project to keep them fed, healthy, and with their family. This organization is awesome with help with other horse herds and people in need.
Ms Barbara is a god send for these mustangs. She tirelessly works to educate, advovate and change laws to benefit our wild horses..
Thank you for All you do for our living legends..
My exposure to the GHF has been nothing short of highly positive. The heart and soul of the GHF belongs to the horses. BJR is always accessible, responsive and thinks and acts “outside the horseshoe” to fundraise for the horses well-being. You can’t go wrong in supporting the GHF - it’s an organization on which my $ are very well-spent. Cheers to Barbara and our hoofed friends!
Gila Herd Foundation of Arizona, started by
Barbara Rasmussen, is truly a fantastic way to have saved our Western Heritage Wild Horses Genealogy. This herd dates back hundreds of years and this organization is seeing to it that the Gila Herd will not become extinct due to human greed. This Foundation gets my seal of approval and I hope one day there will be other organizations that follow suit! I am a proud sponsor and hope others will join the journey!
This wonderful organization rescued several horses at risk of starvation from my state of South Dakota. A few of the horses in the herd at ISPMB had already perished due to lack of food & vet care.
The Gila Herd Foundation personnel traveled across states, through blizzards to rescue these horses, who now thrive in Arizona.
Excellent organization. Very knowledgeable leader. Well organized and dedicated to the preservation of Wild Horses!
Wonderful org that truly cares about the horses! From rescue efforts to collaboration with parties to help wild horses in need.
The founder of this non-profit spent 7+ months in South Dakota and Colorado working asadoption manager for what is believed to be the largest horse rescue in history (907 wild horses). She formed the non-profit to preserve, protect and to bring back to AZ a herd of endangered Spanish Mustangs that were a part of the 907 horses
