Mission: The gerontological society of america (gsa), founded in 1945, is the oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to research, education, and practice in the field of aging. Gsa's principal mission is to advance the study of aging and (continued on schedule o)disseminate information among scientists, decision makers, and the general public.
Programs: Meetings: the society hosts an annual scientific meeting each november. The 2017 annual scientific meeting was not held which normally brings together more than 3,600 international experts and partners from academia, industry, government, and beyond to exchange information and to discuss the broader role of aging science. As the premier gathering of gerontologists from both the united states and around the world, attendees participate in over 450 scientific sessions including symposia, paper, and poster presentations. Instead in july, the society hosted the iagg world congress, an education and exhibits event on behalf of the international association for gerontology and geriatrics in san francisco california with more than 6,050 individuals. The world congress is held every four years. Internationally recognized experts in gerontology and geriatrics share their knowledge and experience through plenary presentations, invited symposia, paper and poster sessions. The 2017 aghe annual meeting and educational leadership conference was held in miami florida and 335 individuals were in attendance. It is the premier international forum for discussing ideas and issues in gerontological and geriatric education. Educators, clinicians, administrators, researchers, and students share their experiences, expertise, and innovations regarding teaching and learning about aging and older persons. In addition to the annual scientific meeting, the society hosted 2 smaller meetings held throughout the united states. The average attendance per meeting was 40 people. The meetings focused on oral health and vaccines.
grants and strategic initiatives: the society completed a large multi-year change agents grant from the john a. Hartford foundation which convened academic geriatrics leaders and providers from previous jahf-affiliated prorams and harnessed their collective knowledge and strengths to improve practice. The society completed a tw0-year initiative to disseminate the findings of the national academies of science, engineering, and medicine (nasem) publication families caring for an aging america. With the funding gsa hosted a briefing on capitol hill "congressional stories of family caregiving: challenges, rewards, and a call to action and published the proceedings from the briefing. Gsa has established itself as a convener of multi-stakeholder collaborations in the field of aging; these include the national adult vaccination program, communicating effectively with older adults: what really works online training module series, and such initiatives as otc medication behaviors of older adults; otc sleep aids and sleep health in older adults; otc medication reconciliation for older adults; cognitive impairment detection and earlier diagnosis; pain management; malnutrition; oral health: and human-animal interaction and healthy aging. In light of the growing demands of the older adult population, a gsa corporate advisory panel works strategically with the society to address the multi-faceted issues impacting aging research, education, practice enterprise, and business models. Tackling the issues and challenges being placed on industry, government, the healthcare system, communities, families, and individuals, the panel identifies solutions that address the ever-growing need for innovative technology, products, services, and support.
publications: the society publishes several peer-reviewed journals: innovation and aging, the gerontologist, the journals of gerontology series a: biological and medical sciences, and the journals of gerontology, series b: psychological and social sciences. These publications provide researchers in the field of gerontology the opportunity to share their findings. Gsa's public policy institute publishes the public policy & aging report. This publication explores policy issues generated by the aging of american society.
