Programs: Ghf attracts over 50,000 to galveston through dickens on the strand and historic homes tour, two signature events that support the larger economy of the galveston and our historic downtown. There are also smaller events throughout the year including heritage festival and history on tap which bring awareness to galveston history and ghf. By utilizing a network of traditional media contacts and social media, ghf is able to communicate our programming and events to members and the general public.
ghf preservation services advances the preservation and revitalization of galveston's historic neighborhoods, buildings, and cultural resources. This department oversees the preservation resource center, architectural warehouse, center for coastal heritage, revolving fund, windstorm exemption program and paint pals. Highlights include ten homes being painted through the paint pals program and acquiring and moving four houses through partnership with utmb for our revolving fund. The revolving fund also acquired three houses through partnership with hud/texas glo. The preservation resource center assisted over 2,000 individuals with property and family research.
ghf historic properties include the operation of two museum sites; the 1892 bishop's palace and the texas seaport museum, five historic sites and a collections facility. Over 60,000 people visit the bishop's palace annually. The texas seaport museum (tsm) is home to the 1877 iron barque elissa, the official tall ship of texas. This site sees over 50,000 visitors and an additional 15,000 school aged children on educational field trips. Tsm is also the docking location for the seagull ii our maritime and historic harbor tour vessel, as well as the santa maria shrimp boat. The 1838 menard house, 1859 ashton villa, 1859 garten verein and 1860 st. Joseph's church hosted over 400 rentals in 2015-2016 and were host to various events throughout the year. Rosewood cemetery, located off seawall boulevard, is maintained by ghf as well. Ghf collections are maintained in an environmentally controlled area and are used throughout the year in exhibits, social media and educational programs.
