Mission: We have a commitment to the education, enjoyment and advancement of the community of wickenburg. The friends of the wickenburg public library, inc. Is a non-profit, all-volunteer community organization whose members support the wickenburg public library through a variety of activities.
Programs: The organization provided financial support to the town of wickenburg by supplying approximately one half of the librarys operating budget. An agreement was signed on march 20, 2011 that requires the friends to pay annually $117,500 in quarterly payments. The organization can no longer meet the financial agreement, therefore the library was shut down by the town of wickenburg. The organization is working on re-opening the library using all their own funds.
The Friends have entered a contract with the Town of Wickenburg to provide $117,500/year to pay half the cost of keeping the public library open through FY 2014-2015. The library is only 3 percent of the town budget, but has taken a terrible hit in the economic downturn. The staff has been reduced to 3 clerks who keep the library open 42.5 hours/week; volunteers provide a lot of assistance. The town has budgeted for and hopes to attract a professional librarian to improve contact with the schools and improve electronic access to materials. This is a small rural town, and any outside help will be appreciated.
