Mission: The mission of the friends of the red river national wildlife refuge, inc. , is to be an advocate for the red river national wildlife refuge by promoting and participating in the conservation, enhancement, and appreciation of our native wildlife communities through education, fund raising, development of partnerships, and development of onsite projects for volunteers.
Programs: The friends of red river sponsor an ongoing invasive species survey and eradication program on the refuge. Students are trained in the use of gps and plot mapping, invasive species identification, and control and eradication methods and are provided a stipend. Approximately 6 students and 2 volunteers participated in the program.
the friends of red river fund wildlife identification reference library and educational program supplies for red river national wildife refuge visitor center and education center, a nature discovery play area, benches for nature trails, native plant landscaping, and a boat dock ramp. The friends purchased canoes & kayaks & related equipment for outdoor programs. The friends operate a backpacks for birders loaner program which provides binoculars, field guides and backpacks for refuge visitors, school children visiting the refuge, and refuge nature camps. Program participants and visitors totaled approximately 6000.
the friends of red river co-sponsor and provide volunteers for multiple red river national wildlife refuge public events including annual refuge celebration, international migratory bird day, great backyard bird count, summer camp and others. Approximately 1200 people attended these events. The friends lead nature & bird walks and other nature-related activities during the events.
