Mission: Our mission is to build a bold, transformative, and inclusive space that connects the citizens of Philadelphia and visitors to the city and each other.
Results: Phase One of the Rail Park is a quarter-mile linear park that hosts cultural events such as the Lunar New Year celebration and our annual Block Party. It also features smaller, community-led experiences that allow Philadelphians to immerse themselves in unique cultures. In 2024 alone, 5,274 visitors attended events organized by Friends of the Rail Park. This phase provides essential green space in a neighborhood with only 4% tree coverage and minimal vegetation. The wild gardens and ample seating offer a peaceful retreat for park-goers. Many people visit daily to meet friends, travel safely along the paths, or simply enjoy the natural surroundings. Serving as an outdoor art exhibit, Phase One features several installations, including our Story Wall, which highlights the local businesses that occupied the area during the railway's heyday. Along the paths, you’ll find marble bricks etched with poetry in various languages and a sculpture celebrating the many birds that visit the park. Additionally, several large-scale murals visible from the park brighten up the neighborhood. Friends of the Rail Park provides educational opportunities for visiting schools. Students come to learn about our pollinator gardens and the history of the railway. Our tour guides help Philadelphians better understand the ecological needs of the area and the important stories behind the park's creation along our guided tours of Phase One and the 3-Mile Vision.
