Mission: The virginia robinson gardens is a unique historic estate, a cultural jewel that transports the visitor back to the birthplace of beverly hills. Built in 1911, it was once the residence of retail giants virginia and harry robinson. The friends of robinson gardens volunteer their time and resources to raise funds for the maintenance of the beautiful six-acre property, which contains five breathtaking display gardens, mansion and pool pavilion, and to fulfill mrs. Robinson's intention, expressed through her will and gift of the estate to the county of los angeles, that her estate be open to the public for its enjoyment and education. The friends also provide educational classes for the community and school children's tours with special emphasis on children from low-income areas.
Programs: The friends of robinson gardens continued its support of the ongoing maintenance of the virginia robinson gardens and provided funding for restoration projects. Work commenced on a substantial renovation and restoration of the card room, which is the second floor of the pool pavilion. This is a painstaking project which requires specialists who understand the sensitivities and demands of working on historic places. The solarium ceiling of the pool pavilion was restored as were statues of neptune, lions, and cranes. The master bedroom and the exterior of the pool pavilion were painted. Trees were trimmed in all of the gardens. Exterior lighting was installed in more areas of the estate in order to improve safely. The friends continued to provide funds for the purchase of drought-tolerant plants in order to comply with beverly hills' mandated water consumption reduction for all large estates.
the friends of robinson gardens engages in community outreach, including the annual science fair for disadvantaged children, botanical illustration classes, and educational programs on horticultural topics that are open to the public. These programs at the facility, serving both children and adults, were expanded in number and subject matter to better serve the public.
