I didn’t know a thing about horses when I started volunteering at Fresh Start, but everyone was super friendly and made me feel right at home

As a board member, I’ve seen just how much heart and hard work goes into everything this non-profit does. This isn’t just a rescue—it’s a thoughtful, professional program that gives all thoroughbreds a real shot at a new life.

I began volunteering at FSSH a few months ago and have been pleasantly surprised in so many ways. From their training methods to their openness about their horses and beautiful facilities with top-notch care, this place is spectacular. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for an OTTB that was restarted in the best way possible. Their honesty about their horses is amazing and they really do bring out the best in every one.

Cassandra is an amazing horsewoman. She loves horses with a pure passion. She is a talented rider and trainer and she also really has a heart for the horses. I had a rescue OTTB named Mikey who needed to be rehomed. He was briefly at a riding school but that career was not a good fit and we heard through the grapevine that he might be going to auction. It was a rare California storm and it was BAD. Pouring. And Mikey was up deep in a winding canyon. I was stuck at work. Cassandra got in her rig within 20 minutes and she drove through an impressive store to make sure Mike was out of there and not at risk. Together we found Mike a new home. That was 5 years ago. I just got a video clip of Mikey. He’s glossy, fit, spoiled and gets to trot around sandy trail. He’s safe. Cassandra made that happen. I’ll always be grateful.

I recognize Casandra as one of the best Caretaker / Rehabilitation Trainers whom is a serious no nonsense type of individual. knowing the degrees of “twisted trainining” and abusive neglect, I have seen jaw-dropping results of these magnificent horses- Cassandra saves these Thoroughbreds whom would have been sold for horrendous reasons or , like a vicious cycle, abused and left to die. She truly lays down her life to save these extraordinary creatures that they are. This is no sham.. She truly has a remarkable God-given gift.

I spent some time at FSSH back in 2019, working there for six months. I didn’t stay longer because I had to move to another state, but Cassandra was always so patient and kind with me. I’m forever grateful for the experience. I learned so much while I was there and I've never met anyone who truly cares about horses and theirs future. 5 stars!

Amazing place for horses! Cassandra does an excellent job of rehabbing and retraining off the track thoroughbreds. I was totally blown away at the quality of the horses she has in training and for sale. I recently bought one from her, and I couldn't be happier! Since he was so reasonably priced, and I could see what a great job she does, I decided to leave him there for additional training which was also very reasonably priced! Thank you Cassandra!

It is an amazing nonprofit doing incredible work. They take retired thoroughbreds and help them transition into new careers, giving these beautiful animals a second chance. If you love horses or just care about animal welfare, this organization is definitely one to support.

I've been volunteering here for a couple of years now and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to find a great place where they can spend time around wonderful horses and do some good work at the same time. Cassandra is very knowledgeable, has a high standard of training and genuinely cares for every horse that comes to her.

I started as a beginner volunteer in the spring, and it’s been such a wholesome experience for me. I didn’t know anything about horses, but I was eager to learn. The team was awesome and super welcoming. I learned a lot!!! I wish I could’ve come more, but my hands are full with work now. I miss those soft noses.

Cassandra is a fantastic trainer. She cares deeply about each horse, gets to know them and understand their personalities. Horses retrained at Fresh Start Sport Horses really do get a fresh start, and only are adopted out to prospective new families that will treat the horse well, and give it a great second career.
