Mission: The foundation is a public policy foundation established to advance knowledge and provide practical solutions for key environmental security concerns around the world. Fess combines data analysis with field research to construct public policy-relevant analyses and program recommendations for governments, civil society, and the private sector to address environmental conditions that pose risks to national, regional, and global security and stability. Fess's work increases public understanding of environmental security challenges through research, outreach, publications, and workshops. The foundation also implements community-driven projects that promote economic development based on the sustainable management of natural resources.
Programs: In support of usaid's global climate change program and office of conflict management and mitigation (via a sub-contract with ard/tetratech) fess undertook extensive field research focused on defining linkages between climate change and conflict in both west african cities and key regions in the sahel. In addition, fess developed a series of major papers on climate and conflict in west africa and the sahel.
