Causes: Economic Development, Urban & Community Economic Development
Mission: Forward communities is a community development organization that strives to educate and engage local citizens as problem solvers in their community. We have a particular focus on young people from disenfranchised communities providing them with the skills, tools, resources, and support they need to envision positive change in their neighborhoods and put their ideas into action. By unleashing the creative potential of our citizens through social entrepreneurship, we believe we can materially improve our local communities by providing relief to the poor, distressed or disadvantaged, lessening the burdens of government through reducing poverty, crime, or recidivism, improving the health and well being of a communitys citizens, reducing a communitys carbon footprint, lessening community tensions, or improving educational achievement.
Programs: Community impact - to elevate the reputation of social innovation communities, grow the social entrepreneurship community, and enhance the relationships and interactions between social entrepreneurs. In 2014, the organization convened numerous events for the social innovation community, including one in east durham, where major economic development efforts are reshaping the area and the livees of those living in this traditionally underserved part of town.
innovation challenges - forward communities administers philanthropic competitions that challenge entrepreneurs to develop, implement, and scale high-impact ideas that address societal issues. In 2014, the organization facilitated an innovation challenge aimed at finding solutions for feeding the 100,000 hungry children in the triangle region. This process led to an award of $50,000 to a nonprofit that now feeds 16,000 more children free breakfast every day in durham's public school system.
forward fellows - the forward fellowship provides select social entrepreneurs with the resources, relationships, and knowledge they need to achieve their social impact over a six month fellowship. In 2014, the organization supported four fellows with social ventures that included a wellness challenge for community congregations, a senior care decision making application, a vaccine sharing program, and a virtual farmers market for startup local farmers.
