In November 2008, the Citrus County Library System saw the need to begin an Adult Literacy Services program with 1 of 4 individuals lacking basic literacy skills. With the help of Executive Director Greg Smith and his wonderful staff, the library system was provided with a training mentor, the foundational knowledge, and many resources. Over 13 years later, our successful literacy program is a direct reflection of the amazing support that we continue to receive from the Florida Literacy Coalition and their staff. The entire FLC Staff is dedicated to bettering communities and peoples' lives through empowerment through literacy. Greg Smith, Executive Director, and Nicole Caban, Education and Training Coordinator, are both true professionals. I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with both Greg and Nicole as a trainer/presenter when collaborating on literacy webinars and when facilitating their Train-the-Trainer sessions. The Citrus County Library System's Adult Literacy Services department would have never gotten off the ground without the help and dedication of the Florida Literacy Coalition. It is not just Citrus County, Florida, that FLC has helped. I have seen them help so many counties starting up literacy programs, and often they've allowed me to be a part of it! The School District of DeSoto County has partnered with the Florida Literacy Coalition for more than ten years. Having collaborated with FLC on numerous endeavors, we have consistently found them to be an organization that goes above and beyond the call of duty for adult learners across the state of Florida. Whether you are working with Greg, Heather, Nicole, or any of the other FLC team members, it is evident of their expertise and desire to help others. Atlantic Technical College has had a partnership with the FLC for the past 4 years. Because of this partnership we have been able to infuse high-quality health and financial literacy instruction into the ESOL curriculum. Even during the pandemic, due to FLC’s support we were able to continue to deliver instruction virtually using their online Staying Healthy curriculum in order to support our students and program.
Even before this partnership, our adult education teachers and practitioners have benefitted from the professional development opportunities that are offered by FLC in the form of webinars, and workshops at the annual conference. Another great resource is the FLC website. Their online presence is a valuable tool for administrators, teachers, students, and tutors providing pertinent information related to the field of adult literacy. FLC is always available to provide support for our programs.

Florida Literacy Coalition has partered with us and our adult ESOL classes for several years. With their wonderful support (financial and free resources) we have incorporated financial and health education to our classes. We have students that come from all walks of life; some professionals others who don't know how to read or write in their own language yet with resources and support from Florida Literacy Coalition we are able to serve them all. The Florida Literacy Coalition has been rewarding for our teachers and students. They provide grant opportunities with tons of support and FREE resources! Our program has been in close contact for the past three years receiving the Health Literacy grant. Without them, we could not have been able to educate and give our students the opportunities that came about due to having the FLC right by our side!
The Florida Literacy Coalition provides support, data, and funding opportunities for volunteer and community based literacy organizations like ours all around the State of Florida. These are vital services that keep our organizations running!

I have been working with a Health Literacy Initiative through The Florida Literacy Coalition for several years, and this organization has been extremely supportive of our efforts at Miami Dade College to infuse a health-related curriculum into our ESOL courses. The organization provides our students with a textbook full of useful vocabulary and information. In addition, the organization is very flexible regarding our ability to allocate resources to instructors, staff, and students. They are always very responsive to my questions and concerns. I highly recommend working with the Florida Literacy Coalition.
I am currently grants and contracts specialist here at LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System, and have become familiar with Florida Literacy Coalition through the work of our own literacy coordinator. We have just had a major reorganization, and it has become necessary to obtain funding sources outside our budget. FLC has made it easy for us to apply and receive funding for our efforts. The staff is uniformly informed and ready to assist in applying for and making best use of those funds. We currently are in the process of our Health Literacy initiative, and hope soon to inaugurate a Financial Literacy one.

Florida Literacy Coalition is an outstanding resource for adult literacy programs throughout Florida. As the recently retired CEO of Learn to Read of St. Johns County and board member of FLC , I can attest to the staff’s professionalism, expertise, and knowledge in adult and family literacy. The staff is forward-thinking and continually researching and implementing better practices from which the entities they serve can and do benefit. There is no “status-quo” at FLC. As they grow, so do we.
The ones who ultimately benefit are our adult learners preparing for a brighter future by improving their literacy skills in reading, writing, GED exam prep, preparing for vocational certification programs entrance requirements, and English for Speakers of Other Languages. In addition, our students learn health and financial literacy through FLC, and FLC has created exceptional learning apps and online learning tutoring programs, which are invaluable to our transportation challenged students.
From the largest of literacy non-profits to the smallest, FLC serves each equally with respect and attention. Florida Literacy Coalition (with a small number of staff) remains one of the most professional and valuable organizations I have had the pleasure and good fortune to know. Learn to Read of St. Johns County is what it is today, in good measure, due to the services, trainings, grant opportunities, and guidance from Florida Literacy Coalition.
The most important point I can make about FLC is that they care deeply about the adult learners we serve. FLC goes the extra mile to recognize the achievements of adult learners at the annual state conference, which is heartwarming and inspiring for all of us. Obviously, I cannot say enough great things about FLC!
We are privileged to work with the Florida Literacy Council in conjunction with our Adult ESOL program at Seminole State College of Florida. We have partnered with them in the Financial Literacy grant for the past two years and they have provided amazing support to ensure the success of the classes. Our participating ESOL students’ financial literacy skills have grown exponentially, and they are now firmly on the path to greater financial self-sufficiency in stewarding their hard-earned wages. The FLC Annual Conference and trainings are invaluable in providing our faculty and staff the knowledge and resources to best serve our students to open a world of new opportunities for them. We are a better program due to the Florida Literacy Coalition.
Florida Literacy Coalition is a great organization that has provided support to our community-based adult literacy organization, Literacy Volunteers of South Sarasota County. Their Education and Training Coordinator arranged professional development workshops for our volunteer tutors and provided free books for the workshops. The Southwest Airlines Ticket Contest conducted by FLC each year has been a great fundraiser for our organization. The Annual Florida Literacy Conference helped our tutor trainer and a staff member to broaden their knowledge and skills to continue to make improvements in our adult literacy programs.
We am pleased to work with adult literacy through READ Lakeland, Inc. We are a small non-profit, yet have a very large area to cover in Polk County, Florida in helping adults with low literacy skills and learning the English Language. We are fortunate to have the Florida Literacy Coalition as a partner in sharing their resources, providing digital tutor training at no charge, grant information, and providing a network of possibilities to enhance our program. They are always available to answer questions and lead us in the right direction to help adult learners. We are so grateful to have the Florida Literacy Coalition assisting and partnering with READ Lakeland.
The Florida Literacy Coalition (FLC) of Florida has been a life-jacket for our organization. Literacy Volunteers of Collier County has been serving the Naples community for over 34 years. We offer the Adult ESOL Program, as well as Digital Literacy and Financial Literacy training. As a community-based organization we are supported by individual donors and foundations. We do not receive any federal funding. All our teachers/tutors are volunteers who willingly and eagerly want to give back to the community. The last two years have been extremely difficult because many of our fundraising events had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. The support FLC has given in trainings, information and grants have been invaluable.
Now more than ever, we all understand the importance of preparing members of our community through education to gain meaningful employment and provide a better future for their families. FLC consistently keeps providing the support needed to give our students a quality education. We are extremely grateful to have been granted the Digital Literacy Grant during a most crucial time. Our students and teachers had to transition to online instruction very quickly, and without FLC we wouldn’t had had the appropriate software programs needed to deliver 21st century instruction.
We have a treasure in Florida, it is call the Florida Literacy Coalition!
