Mission: Figure skating in harlem (fsh) is the first organization in the world to combine the power of education with the grace and discipline of figure skating to empower young women to thrive and build strong leaders. Since 1997, our program has provided students ages 6 18 with access to educational, health, and fitness services to help them reach their fullest potentials. Our mission is to help girls transform their lives and grow in confidence, leadership, and academic achievement. Using figure skating as a powerful magnet, we provide new york city and detroit youth with rigorous year-round programs that promote academic success, physical health and emotional well-being. As a result, our girls experience holistic growth in a safe and supportive environment. Our vision is for every student, regardless of socio-economic background, to acquire the foundational academic, social and leadership skills to achieve her dreams. Programs: Figure skating in harlem is an outcomes-based program that provides a complement of academic, leadership, health and wellness services to girls and tracks their progress both yearly and longitudinally from their time of enrollment. We provide spaces for 280 girls ages 6-18 to spend up to 900 hours annually in our two new york city programs and reached over 150 more in workshops introducing the community to figure skating in detroit. During the school year, i can excel (ice) program. , 175 girls spend 3-6 days per week engaged in small group tutoring, stem, financial literacy and communications classes, self-advocacy/leadership sessions, figure skating, and fitness conditioning. Periodic career and field trips broaden their horizons while middle and high school guidance and workshops prepare them for success in school and college.
in 2017, we launched our first chapter, figure skating in detroit. In early 2017 we held three workshops introducing the community to figure skating in detroit, including the health, nutrition, education and leadership aspects of the figure skating harlem model as well as skating basics. The workshops reached 153 girls, 106 parents and guardians and was followed by a summer camp in august, and our full i can excel (ice) program in october, 2017.
in our summer drams camp, 85 girls ages 6-14 spend 35 hours per week engaged in math, reading, stem, leadership, skating, fitness conditioning and weekly field trips. Twenty older girls participate in summer college exploration activities, including one-on-one guidance, workshops and trips.
