Mission: When Joe & Sandy Barker with their two children arrived in the Islands of Granada, Nicaragua in 1993 there was rampant unemployment, an every-climbing birthrate (one per day in a pop. of 3000 people), 50% infant mortality, 2nd & 3rd degree malnutrition among those who lived, such deplorable living conditions it is almost unimaginable, alcohol abuse, hunger, lack of adequate shelter, and no medical care. Using personal savings and rental income, Joe & Sandy discovered a little went a long way with these folks who had practically nothing. Realizing that 100% of any donations would go to meet the needs of these 3000+ impoverished folks, friends in the U.S.A. wanted to help so Families Involved Serving Humanity, Inc. was incorporated and became a 501(c)(3) in 1996. Now, under the direction of Nicaraguan Pastors Alfredo and Sonia Ponza: a rural health center built in 1994 and staffed with a Nicaraguan doctor and nurse addresses all the medical needs; 4 rural schools with 25 Nicaraguan teachers provide educational opportunities; sheets of roofing tin and food/clothing/etc. are provided to those in need; a church has been established where lives have been transformed through the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Bible Studies, and continuing education is provided. In just nine years the results are incredible among the Islands people. Many lives have been transformed! Whole families now have their children in school, better health, vocational opportunities and the hope of eternal life. Although providing these needs requires only $20,000 per YEAR, we do foresee a time in the future when even that will no longer be necessary. In essence, our goal is to truly "work ourselves out of a job". As always, the Barkers receive no monetary compensation whatsoever for their involvement in F.I.S.H. Their efforts have been and will continue to be a VOLUNTEER effort! Sandy continues to raise funds for the continuing efforts of Pastor Alfredo and keeps the books for the IRS so that your much appreciated gift will be tax-deductible.
