Working with Hunger First has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. We are a no questions asked facility, offering food, clothing and household items at our new location at 1697 Lynn Garden Drive, Kingsport, TN. I love the way it is set up where it is a "free store" where you can go in and choose what you want or need. One of the things the director, Michael, must have learned from his mom who formed this non-profit, was empathy and dignity for all walks of life, and it truly shows in the way that things happen here. Early on when I started volunteering, I got caught up in this spirit of compassion. It is hard not to! Every single person that walks through the doors of this facility and the previous one on Myrtle Street, they are treated with kindness, respect and dignity. For everyone has a story to tell, everyone has problems that they have to deal with and live with, and not everyone has someone to care. I truly believe that to many people who come to Hunger First, we are of the few that truly care. It is not just about the food or the clothes or the blankets. It is about the caring, and recognizing an individual's worth, no matter their circumstances.
