Mission: The fairbanks institute for healthy communities, inc. ("fihc"), is organized and operated exclusively to further the charitable, educational, and scientific purposes of its 5 supported organizations: central indiana corporate partnership, inc. , the city of indianapolis, indiana university, indiana state department of health, and the health and hospital corporation of marion county. Fihc intends to accomplish such purposes by creating a community-based research laboratory "platform" to conduct basic and translational research aimed at predicting, preventing, and treating age-related diseases. Fihc's goal in designing this platform is to assemble and maintain a rich and comprehensive collection of disease-specific data for a variety of age-related conditions and diseases. It is hoped that such data, when developed by academic users and industry participants, will lead to advances in basic and applied research for the purpose of improving health care and public health.
Programs: The fairbanks institute for healthy communities is the sponsor of the indiana health study. By studying indiana communities, the indiana health study will allow researchers to better understand the causes of common diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes. The mission of the fairbanks institute is to improve the health of indiana communities by facilitating research that leads to better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat disease. A not-for-profit organization, the fairbanks institute is a local initiative that will have national impact.
