I am a volunteer at Medical Mutts and I chose this organization because they not only provide a valuable service to people with medical and emotional needs, they also rescue dogs from shelters. I believe strongly in rescuing dogs and not promoting the breeding of dogs.
Medical Mutts training methods utilize positive reinforcement only. Their dogs are happy and well cared for at the facility.
Dogs that are not well suited for being a service dog are adopted out to loving homes. I adopted one of those dogs!
A wonderful place to volunteer. Their work is so meaningful, their staff are incredible and of course the dogs are an absolute joy to work with.
Losing independence as a disabled person is really, really hard. I'm a long-time pancreas cancer survivor who has developed a rare form of diabetes - I knew it was time I got a service dog teammate to help me keep running half marathons safely - along with all other aspects of my life more safely as well. Intro Medical Mutts into my life! I'm a busy executive in my day to day life and knew I didn't have the capacity to train my own and I looked across the country for an organization that aligned with my medical needs, my heart, my chosen training style (fear free), and would take me on as a non-traditional diabetic.. MM was it! My match, Pancakes, is everything I could have hoped for in a pup and they matched us incredibly well to our temperaments. We spent two weeks with them doing training and I was set up with everything I could possibly need to be successful with my partnership. We're provided ongoing support for however long we need it. I am in awe of this organization and couldn't be happier with my choice to work with them.
Medical Mutts provided a solution when other options had failed. I received two diagnoses that changed the very way I had to live my life. I had a foster pup who was part kangaroo and part Einstein and it took me exactly 8 days to inform the Brown County Humane Society that she was our forever dog. I built her an agility course to get some of that energy out. That's when I found Medical Mutts. I did not really believe that we would make it through the program but I was willing to try anything to stay off the hamster wheel of medications that weren't helping. Tate was a rock star and the more I worked with her the more I realized I didn't give my little fur-genius enough credit. We worked hard, rode out the ups and downs, and made it through all the classes with amazing support from our Medical Mutts trainers and all the resources they provided us. I now have a fully-trained service dog who is my medical ally. I am deeply indebted to Medical Mutts for believing my shelter dog could become my helper dog and for giving me my independence back.
Medical Mutts Service Dogs Inc is amazing! We have a fantastic dog who was trained very well for our needs. The ongoing support before, during and after training is fantastic. They truly care about their dogs AND the people taking them home. THANK YOU!
This organization is a true win win. Shelter dogs find forever homes, and people who need assistance find a service dog. Training methods are second to none, and lives are changed as a result.
I spent most of my life as an athlete - from competitive alpine racing to dirtbike riding, I was an outdoorsy Oregon girl through and through. I never expect to have my body betray me in the prime of my life. In 2021, I contracted COVID-19 and developed debilitating Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome immediately after - a condition in which my heart and brain fail to communicate, resulting in racing heart rate, extreme fatigue, fainting, painful palpitations, weakness, shortness of breath, and brain fog. Someone who could once run 10 miles without stopping now could barely walk up the stairs without sitting down. I mourned what my body had become, but mostly I mourned the future it put in jeopardy - I had recently gotten in to Georgetown Law School and was scheduled to start in Fall 2024. I was terrified of falling behind in my studies and flunking out of school because of things beyond my control.
While most who contract POTS are able to manage the condition with medication, my POTS was proven to be treatment resistant. After a year of failed treatment and losing consciousness nearly every day, I was recommended to a service dog for mobility assistance and possible detection of my episodes. I found Medical Mutts in an online forum and instantly knew they were the right match. Their training style, incredible staff, and immaculate record were astounding. Even then, I could have never expected how drastically my life would improve after acquiring one of their dogs, Chloe.
Chloe is able to detect my POTS episodes up to 10 full minutes before I feel symptoms via scent detection training. She not only alerts me to episodes and ensures I am on the ground and safe, but lays on my lap to push blood back up to my head, guards me from strangers in the city, and brings me the appropriate medical supplies. I went from passing out daily to having two episodes per week on average. Her ability to detect my episodes has also been integral in mitigating their severity, meaning not only am I left with less pain and brain fog afterward, but I am able to recover quickly and proceed throughout my day. Because of Medical Mutts and Chloe, I am now in law school, confident in my ability to reach my highest potential. She - and the CONSTANT support of the Medical Mutts team throughout the process and afterward - have changed my life irrevocably. Organizations like theirs, with the values and services they provide, are rare and deserve to be cherished.
Medical mutts has trained a psychiatric service dog to accomplish tasks I need to help me. They are extremely knowledgeable about all types of service dog someone may need. They have a great staff and they don’t leave you after you are given you’re service dog. They become part of your family,
Before my service dog, my world was small, limited to doctor's appointments and home. I didn't go to stores, parties, a restaurant, or even outside. All I did was go to my doctor's appointments and back home. Triggers are the worst for me; they can come up when you least expect it. At a store, when someone is in a hurry and bumps into me or gets too close to me, new triggers you didn't even know you had can happen. But my service dog learned to detect my anxiety, panic attacks and ptsd and respond with incredible precision. He pokes me when my anxiety spikes, stands in front of me to keep people from getting too close, interrupts me when l'm scratching endlessly, lays his head on my legs when my legs are shaking, and me during nightmares. His presence has given me the courage to reclaim parts of my life I thought were lost forever. One unforgettable moment was after a tough session with my psychiatrist. I was emotionally drained, lying in the van when Valentine rested his head on my neck. His calm breathing soothed me in a way I hadn't experienced before. It was then I knew I could trust him completely, even without words.
Training is ongoing, and we work together every day. It's not just about me trusting him; it's about understanding his signals and reinforcing his training. One crucial task we worked on was pressing an emergency button in our home. It took time, but with Jennifer's help from Medical Mutts, my services dog learned how to press that button on the floor and get the emt’s to help me. My service dog has opened my world and I can’t wait to continue our journey together. If your interested in getting a service dog I highly recommend medical mutts
We looked for a compassionate organization that would work with us to train our Sam for service dog work. When we began our journey with medical mutts we quickly realized we make the correct choice for us and Sam. We saw the option for the online virtual classes, applied, and were accepted. We have been so happy we had chosen this path. Before we found medical mutts, we had heard horrible stories of how dogs could be treated during service dog training, or taken from placements for another person. Not only that but most want to take your dog to “reprogram your dog”. First of all, Sam is our beloved friend and companion. Medical mutts understands that a dog can be a loved companion and perform service dog work as well. Melissa has been compassionate, understanding and professional. The experience has been amazing. There are opportunities to have additional assistance if Sam is struggling with a command, and the opportunity to slow down and realize that dogs have off days too. We are very happy to have found this organization. If we didn’t have our Sam already, we would have trusted them to pair us with one of their rescued and professionally trained service dogs.
This place is AMAZING! So helpful and accommodating. I did "train your own dog" and they did such a good job helping me to understand how to do so. Answered all my questions. So happy I chose Medical Mutts to get a service dog! Thank you!!
We are always welcome there, and they are going out of their way to help us with any issues we have. Thank you Medical Mutts for your ongoing support.
I have my 2nd Service Dog from Medical Mutts since June 2022. First, I had Gretchen a wonderful German Shepherd and now I have Moonie, a white German Shepherd/Husky mix. All aspects of Medical Mutts are ultimate professionalism. From the interviews to the process explanations to the final 10 days of training with our new dogs. All the employees are extremely kind, professionals, patient, easy to interact with and dedicated to training the dogs with only positive reinforcement methods. The founder, Jennifer Cattet Ph.D., has a rare expertise in the world that she so generously shares in order to both save dogs from shelters and help people like me with a need for a Service Dog to help us navigate life in a safer and more independent manner. Eva Rudisile, Director of Client Services and Operations, provides a lifetime support after we go home with our new dogs. Eva is an absolute gem; the kindest, most positive person you could have the chance of encountering in life. Her exquisite personality is only matched by her extensive knowledge of Service Dog training along with their quirks and different situations that occur in life. All in all, I wholeheartedly recommend Medical Mutts for anyone who needs a Service Dog or are looking for a non-profit to support.

Hello! I am an extremely grateful recipient of my second Service with Medical Mutts. I have Multiple Sclerosis. Working with Medical Mutts' staff is such a wonderful experience! Every staff member I have been in contact with have been extremely helpful, personable, kind, very involved in making sure my needs were met. The staff from caregivers to trainers to management are all working as a team to make sure the dogs provided are ready for the people they will serve. The trainers and management personnel are indeed experts in their field. That's why I got my second dog from Medical Mutts.
Review for Medical Mutts - 5 Stars
I cannot praise Medical Mutts Service Dogs enough for the incredible work they do to transform the lives of both shelter dogs and individuals with disabilities. Having attended service dog graduations, I have been moved by the powerful stories shared by clients who have experienced firsthand the life-changing impact these service dogs bring to their lives.
It is heartwarming to witness how these remarkable dogs provide individuals with disabilities a newfound sense of independence, support, and companionship. The dedication and training that Medical Mutts invests in these shelter dogs not only gives them a chance for a fulfilling life but also empowers them to become invaluable service companions.
The Purse Bingo event I attended was an absolute delight and showcased the organization's commitment to raising awareness and funds for their worthy cause. The level of organization and execution of the event was impressive, and it was evident that the entire team at Medical Mutts is passionate about their mission.
As a donor and supporter of Medical Mutts, I am thrilled to contribute to their efforts in creating positive change in the lives of individuals with disabilities and giving shelter dogs a second chance at life through service work. This organization truly embodies the essence of compassion, dedication, and inspiration, and I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone looking to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. Medical Mutts Service Dogs is a shining example of what can be achieved when love and determination come together to create something truly remarkable.
This is my second review of Medical Mutts. I wrote the first when we were six months or so into our training.
My dog and I participated in the Zoom-based course and passed our final tests in Indianapolis in June 2023. (He got an A, which made me realize that I would have bragged my head off about my children if I’d had any!)
The first thing to say is that you could not find a better service dog agency. That is down to the people who work there: their knowledge, teaching ability, cutting-edge methods, and abiding compassion for clients.
I learned from Melissa Morris and Jennifer Cattet, the founder. I can hardly find enough words to describe how much I received from them. I remember one class and a few private communications in particular when I was in the depths of my illness and almost couldn’t function. I am sometimes ashamed of my disability, so I work hard not to show it, but they seemed to know what was going on and to find the right way to deal with what it meant for Danny (pictured on his first airplane trip) and me and our. We went at our own pace, but with lots of support and understanding.
The other aspect I need to emphasize is how few agencies exist that are qualified—and willing—to train psychiatric service dogs to ADI standards for non-veterans. Veterans can often bring grant monies to the table, and I am 100 percent in favor of their having dogs.
A dog from another agency whom I helped train throughout covid and who was supposed to come to me permanently was taken away—the biggest heartbreak of my life—and given to a veteran. He is now a dear friend, and that wonderful dog is his lifeline. But finding another agency that would take on my puppy and me was very difficult. Those agencies are needed desperately. And on a more personal note, I was so devastated by my prior experience that I was afraid to try again. But MM was there and welcomed me warmly.
Third, although my brother gave me my dog, most MM clients receive former shelter dogs, trained by MM to.support people within a range of disabilities. Not every dog they rescue has the attributes for or interest in service work, and those “career change” dogs go to loving home through MM’s frequent adoption events. This cycle is so critical for the former shelter dogs, and very very few agencies take it on.
I could provide Medical Mutts with an endowment that would allow them to spend more time on the people and dogs who need them and leas on fundraising. I understand that there are thousands of worthy causes, and I support this one as well as I can. But they need angels. Consider this a prayer for an angel. .
These are the good guys.

My 16-month-old Labrador retriever and I are on the second of four levels on the way to (I hope) passing the gold-standard test for a service dog/handler team, the Assistance Dogs International Public Access Test. Medical Mutts has a gloriously flexible model that allows us to attend classes via Zoom and submit videos demonstrating our command of the material we're learning. I looked a long time for this kind of program after a service dog agency where I live proved not to be helpful. I love the curriculum and the step-by-step, clear explanations of what we are doing and why. Our teachers, Jennifer and Melissa, are thoroughly up to date on how to best train dogs and are very very good at explaining both the how AND the why. My dog and I are training as a psychiatric team, and I deeply trust our teachers to understand my needs and help us work as a well-oiled team.
I love medical mutts. I constantly see people looking for a place to train their dog for service work. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. They helped me train my standard poodle to assist my autistic daughter. And now they are helping me again in training my current dog to help mitigate my disability. The training is positive and top notch. The curriculum they use to train your own service dog is wonderful and broken down in easy to learn chunks. They have zoom classes so you can learn right in your own home. There is homework and videos to use to practice the skills and get help from trainers. I always have someone I can reach out to if I’m struggling and that is also what makes them a step above!! I love this place and feel lucky to have found them.
I refer everyone I meet who's seeking to train their dog to become a legitimate service companion to Medical Mutts Service Dogs. They've been the best resource tool I've found in my journey to training my dog, and I've been impressed with their knowledge and assistance every step of the way. I've gained confidence through their guidance in how to train my dog, and never felt rushed or ashamed if took us a little longer to get through a skill. Their professionalism, care for the animals, understanding, and patience is unmatched. I value that they teach positive reinforcement and never yell or degrade any of the dogs. The steps for each skill are easily broken down and modeled in several ways so that you can clearly follow them and succeed. They are very knowledgeable, able to help you problem-solve if issues pop up, and aren't in this to just make money. This is an organization you can trust.
I did a lot of research before choosing Medical Mutts largely because of their mission which aligns with my passion for rescue dogs as well as the accessibility of their classes. We have done Foundations, Intermediate, and the Public Access course, and are currently in the Advanced level. I'll give some more detail of my experience.
Firstly, the trainers; mostly we work with Melissa and Jennifer and they are WONDERFUL. Both of them are so knowledgeable about dogs and R+ training and I look forward to the classes or feedback from videos I send because I always get helpful corrections that always make a big difference in a behavior we are struggling to nail. In addition, they are wonderful advocates for the dogs that are in their program even through owner training. They are very willing to work at the pace necessary for folks with chronic illnesses and disabilities so you don't feel pushed to advance before you and your dog are ready to move on from a course.
They are also very open about the process and what to expect. We have been fortunate enough to move along at our predicted pace because my pup is picking up all the skills very quickly but there would be no issue if we had needed to repeat a course to get a better handle on our foundations and obedience.
There are many organizations out there that take advantage of disabled folks and I feel incredibly fortunate to have found Medical Mutts. From when I first reached out and spoke on the phone with Jack Topham he was extremely transparent about not only their program but all of my options. After our phone call where he asked me a lot of questions about what I am hoping for and looking for in a SD and thoroughly outlined all the information for me, he also emailed me with a follow up detailing their different options from getting a program dog (as well as the predicted wait time and cost), board and train, and owner training. He outlined the overall cost of each option and answered all of my follow ups with patience and lots of information, especially as I transitioned from wanting a program dog to deciding to owner train.
There is also an enormous amount of information provided on the website about temperament testing and doing your best to find a SD candidate that will succeed, as well as a reputable book written by Jennifer Cattet about that very subject.
Jennifer is extremely knowledgeable and it is so lovely to work with her. She approaches dog training with such compassion and focus on the bond between the handler and dog and I think that fuels a lot of the success in their methods. Her experience, as well as the knowledge and experience of the trainers that work for her like Melissa, provides their students with so many ways to troubleshoot and adjust our methods to help our dogs put together what they need to do.
I cannot recommend Medical Mutts enough -- I have had an absolutely wonderful time training with them so far and even with my disability providing some complications (as expected...) I am so proud of what we have accomplished with the support of the Medical Mutts team. I did not expect to have a medical alert task but they have been able to help me teach my dog to do just that, which is more than I had even hoped for -- now my dog is learning to be a medial alert AND response dog and it's going to increase my quality of life immensely.
I've included a couple of photos of my darling pup Leila on PA outings. (headphones are because we were in a very loud part of the city and on and off the subway)
This non profit has integrity. They CARE about the dogs, staff, volunteers and clients!
We foster dogs for them and attend training classes to teach them their level 1 training. Only the best is provided for the rescued dogs, including vet care.
Some of the best, experienced positive based trainers I've experienced!
A terrific organization providing a much needed valuable service to their clients.
I have recently started volunteering for Medical Mutts. What an amazing organization! The staff are all incredibly nice, and the work they do is so important. I look forward to getting more involved!
A service dog can make life with a disability much more manageable. But between finding the right dog and the right place was taking longer. We were all working as a team even my psychiatrist. We knew that we couldn’t just give money away to just anyone. It had to be a good fit and so much time and research came into play. My family knew it would be life changing for me and them.
I started looking at YouTube video on what to look for and if a service dog would help me, and more importantly for me I saw first hand the struggles my whole family experience with me in a daily bases.
So I went on line and just typed “ Selecting a Service dog” and there it was a link to a video on Medical Mutts. I can’t tell you how many videos I saw on YouTube. I heard their stories and I felt in my heart this is where I can get my service dog. Who thought that a dog that was at a shelter can be trained.
I was hooked I’m going to save a life and intern that dog will save mine. That’s how my journey began
That’s how I found medical mutts I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a service dog.
The first video I saw was of Dr Jennifer someone who was very knowledgeable about what Service Dog can do for people and she was one of the first to give shelter dogs an opportunity to be a service dog, I found her to be very knowledgeable, and experienced enough that I made that call.
That call changed my life forever for the better. Yes it’s a long wait, but everyday I’d say to my self look at the videos see their process in finding the right dog.
So then the day came an email with a dog named Valentine, I couldn’t keep still for a year in a half I prepared my self by watching all medical mutts videos and if your in doubt watch them see it for yourself.
Their dedication, hours of training and the careful selection of getting a sheltered, dog, and spending hours and the trainers would find out if this dog can be a service dog. If they fail they don’t return the dog they find homes for these dogs it’s a win win.
For anyone looking to buy a Service dog, take a look for yourself watch those videos, hear what Peolpe are saying about Medical Mutts.
Once you buy your service dog from Medical Mutts you also become something bigger a family, a organization that will check on how you and your service dog are doing and organization that when you graduated and leave with your service dog, you realize the staff has become part of your family.
I also encourage anyone that can, please make a donation to medical mutts. Every little bit helps.
Finally for all the trainers, volunteers, board members and organizations that support this facility.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me a second chance of life and I’m looking forward down the road having the confidence I will have with my service dog Valentine.
Nancy Guzman & family
I have been volunteering at Medical Mutts for a few months and I am so proud to be a part of this wonderful organization. They put so much love, care, and compassion into these dogs. A truly dedicated group of people giving dogs a second chance and helping people find the support they need.
There are no words to describe how incredible of an organization and business Medical Mutts Service Dogs Inc is! We started our training in the fall of 2021 and have been over the moon ever since. My dog Moxie Mae has been working through each incredible level and is now on the last Level of her training process, so close to completing training and becoming a service dog! The medical mutts team is next to none. Their expertise, knowledge, understanding and cooperation has made this journey so incredible for us. Not only have they made the training process so accessible to someone who lives half way across the country, but they have not only equipped Moxie Mae with the tools for success but taught me how to be the best service dog trainer possible. The compassion, love and joy that we experience each training session, whether it is in a group class or a private session has made our experience so positive. We love the science behind all of the training and how the main practices all focus on positive reinforcement and force free training. Not many service dog training facilities offer that, and that was a absolute must for us. I am beyond thrilled to continue learning and working with Medical Mutts as we move forward. They have helped me to train my service dog and allow me to have my freedom back. There are no words at how thankful I am for them and their program.
What a wonderful organization! So helpful & caring! I’m on their wait list for a service dog. They are always so quick to respond to questions. So far I’ve had a really good experience with Medical Mutts and can’t wait to get my service dog.
Great org that works to help people. Love that they use positive reinforcement training methods to train the service dogs. Also love seeing shelter dogs being trained to become service dogs.
Medical Mutts for sure exceeded my expectations! Baruch and I are almost all the way through with training. The train your own dog program allows for incredible flexibility in terms of schedules, possibilities, but it is also an opportunity for someone like me, living in Canada, to have access to their expertise. We worked privately with Mrs. Cattet and I am forever grateful for her help and her considerate approach in regard to my own needs as well as Baruch’s wellbeing. It has made such a significant difference in my daily life. Training was made easy, progressive and fun for me and my dog. Also, a wide variety or resources are provided beyond the great coaching: pdf sheets to track your progress or ensure you are ready for upcoming assessments, academy website access with extra tips, tricks, and materials you will need, videos, books recommendations and so on.
Pricing is fair and if it is a solution you have been thinking about, I think it is worth considering. I had been putting money aside for a while for this project and it did not exceed my budget which can be a testimony to the fairness of the pricing. All in all, I think it is a life-changing experience and if you put your trust in them, they are giving all of their effort and passion to help you and your partner. I just went to the hospital, and Baruch was allowed to come along for this time. Staff members were pretty impressed about how “unbothered” of him they were ha ha! I was asked to leave the website address to one of the staff for a patient: if that’s not impressive! Again, even though I am really proud of the work we did together, it’s all thanks to Mrs. Cattet and Medical Mutts.
A grateful team,
Daphnée
PS: Baruch (the dog) loooooves to participate by the way. He is living a happy life while helping me out which is all we could wish for.
We have been training our dog, Honey with Medical Mutts since October 2021, when she was a 5 month old puppy. Fast forward 10 months later and we are part way through the Advanced state of the training. I can’t say enough good things about Jennifer and Melissa. They get to the root of any problem or obstacle very quickly and we always feel supported through all of the challenges. They are exceptional trainers who communicate clearly, with compassion and kindness. This is my first experience training a dog to be a service dog and it has been incredibly rewarding. Thank you for all that you do and for all the human and dog lives you change. ❤️
My teen son, who has autism and ADD, suffers from depression and acute anxiety. His psychiatric service dog has made a huge difference in his life by accompanying him to high school and other stressful locations. The folks at Medical Mutts are driven by love and compassion. The application and interview process was very manageable. The in-person training was intense and set our team up for success. We have weekly check-ins since graduation and full support for any training questions and issues. Medical Mutts is not just invested in their mission and their dogs; they are invested in their clients. We are so very grateful to them!
We had such a fantastic experience in the Foundation Level 1 online training course. I really wasn't sure before how an online class would work for us, but I was amazed and impressed with how Melissa ran the course - it was even better than an in person class for us because we could work from home (really helpful with my disability) with minimal distractions, and Melissa and James were really helpful, engaged, and attentive to what we were doing on camera. Melissa gave excellent feedback specific to what we were doing, and I was so amazed and how quickly my dog Rosalie was able to learn with Melissa's instruction. I also really loved the pacing of this course, and I appreciate how there were off weeks to continue to practice the behaviors, and how Melissa always encouraged us to work at our dog's specific pace. It was also fantastic to see how well my dog Rosalie learned with positive training methods only - it felt great that Medical Mutts prioritized how the dog is feeling, and building communication between the dog and the handler! We couldn't have asked for a better experience. Thank you Medical Mutts!
I am training my rescue dog for panic attacks and acute stress related anxiety. I was directed to Medical Mutts Academy from one of my previous private trainers as they were the only ones with positive-only training that also offered online classes (crucial during covid times). From the initial assessment of my rescue dog, I got the feeling that not only are the staff at Medical Mutts thorough and honest about what is to be expected of service dogs and their training, but also they were super understanding and willing to work with my dog who tends to be on the shy side of dog personalities.
We just finished level 1 of the course and we cannot recommend MMA enough. The group classes are sized appropriately where the trainer(s) can provide you direct feedback -- live during the session, or via email too -- and the best part is, if you and your dog are not ready to move on to the next level, you can retake the previous level at no cost.
Given that the service dog regulations are very loosely defined and many dog owners cut corners to "certify" their dogs to be service dogs resulting in "service dogs" without proper public access training, it's refreshing to find a community where legitimate service dog training is affordable (compared to just purchasing a service dog) and where they prioritize making sure service dogs aren't frowned upon by ensuring proper training and behavior.
Thank you MMA for the opportunity to train my own rescue dog to be my service dog!
I cannot say enough good things about Medical Mutts. I was attracted to them because of their mission to train rescue dogs, and that their dogs are trained to the International Association of Assistance Dog Partners (IAADP) standards, meaning I could travel with my service dog internationally. When I heard they are were offering virtual training, coinciding with my dog, Mina, needing more advanced training, I was so excited.
Their response time was immediate to me requesting an evaluation, and it was super easy to get the videos they wanted sent to them. The interview was very thorough, and I’ve been absolutely impressed with everything about them since starting small group training. Our trainer, Melissa, is so knowledgeable and a great teacher. Our training course is incredibly individualized to the dogs in our group, and she is always available for answering questions.
And the training just wow! They provide so much material - videos and handouts and power points galore. For every task there is a list of step by step instructions telling you exactly what to do and why you are doing it. And I’m really seeing a difference with Mina - even when we’re not actively working on training, she is in general much more attuned to me and quick to obey.
And because of the way they’ve designed their curriculum, by the time we’ve finished all three levels of training, my dog will have the AKC STAR Puppy certification, the AKC CGC certification, the IAADP certification, and passed a public access test.
If you are ready to get started with service training, definitely contact Medical Mutts. You and your dog will not be sorry.
We have had a great experience working with Medical Mutts to train our dog as a psychiatric service animal. In spite of the complications and difficulties of the pandemic, the team at Medical Mutts was able to provide effective, dynamic training through their online classes. They went above and beyond to help us with our dog, even scheduling an in-person session for us when we needed extra help with a behavior.
Medical Mutts has been an amazing organization to work with. They have given me the tools and confidence to work with my own dog to create our service team. Andi and I have grown closer and it is wonderful to see her enjoy her new job. The instructors were always there to answer questions, work through struggles and share victories.
I started following Medical Mutts years ago. I’m a 65 year old type one diabetic and wanted an extra tool in my pocket so to speak. When Medical Mutts offered one on one training via zoom I was very excited to begin. I was owner, trainer. Actually Melissa had to train me more than my dog! Melissa was patient and kind and very encouraging! She talked me off the ledge of feeling like I’m failing many times. We spent a year training via zoom with Medical Mutts. We graduated this past August 2021. I was so thrilled and pleased with the progress my dog, Dixie, made. I purchased Dixie from a breeder in the great hopes that she would be my dog that would save my life!! Now Dixie alerts me through the day, range is 100 to 180. She is relentless with poking me, she keeps me in better control than my Dexcom. I can’t say enough about Medical Mutts!! I absolutely love this organization and everything that Jennifer Cattet has accomplished. Thank you Jennifer and Melissa and the whole staff that keeps this organization going! ❤️
Jen and her team are wonderful. They are very patient and helpful. Each class is very informative and it’s incredible to see how our dog is learning each class. They are very supportive and the course has flown by. I highly recommend them to someone who seriously wants to train their dog to be a service animal.
I have had the privilege of working with the team at Medical Mutts on several occasions. The people working at Medical Mutts have an extensive knowledge of how dogs learn, how they need to be motivated and how positivity is the driving factor for dogs to flourish.
My Diabetic Alert Dog Chai has been such a wonderful addition to our family. He has provided a security that comes from knowing that he is always near and ready to detect my lows and highs that I can no longer detect on my own.
He has created the safety net I needed for my daily living with Type 1 Diabetes.
Medical Mutts mission is to save shelter dogs and create a team with their person that benefits both lives immeasurably. To this I and my family are grateful!
Medical Mutts and their team helped place our son with a medical alert dog in 2020. The months of preparation and communication as they found a dog, trained her, and helped prepare us for working with her were incredible. The staff are knowledgeable, communicative, creative with problem-solving, warm, and compassionate. Our time with them while they helped our son learn to work with his service dog was life-changing. They are incredibly experienced with the needs of their clients, including age, location, daily life, strengths, and challenges. Their teaching and facilitation meets clients where they are, ensuring a great match with the service dogs. We highly recommend Medical Mutts and are grateful daily for this organization.

Medical Mutts changed our lives. This organization trains and matches service dogs to adults and kids with medical needs and disabilities. Earlier this year, our son, C, was matched with Darcy. Darcy is a psychiatric service dog, and helps C navigate the world and collaborate the participate fully in school and our community. Not only did Medical Mutts spend more than six months fostering and training Darcy, they trained C and our family in person to learn to help Darcy help him. Our time learning with Medical Mutts is one of the highlights of everything we've experienced as a family. I have recommended this organization to multiple other families of kids with special needs and special educators. Medical Mutts combines exceptional research-based experience with animal training and understanding dogs with care for their clients and a commitment to creating relationships that change lives for their clients. I am grateful every day for Darcy, for Medical Mutts, and for all of their staff and volunteers. My son's ability to move through the world and grow as a successful, happy, and confident young adult is so enriched by Darcy and their collaboration.
Thank you Medical Mutts for helping us train our own dogs to become service dogs, I wouldn't trust anyone else to get on that long journey.

We are currently waiting for our seizure assistance dog and every step of the way has been amazing with Medical Mutts. The communication, the process, the level of detail and compassion....we couldn’t be more excited and pleased! I love seeing all the information and updates and it’s clear they are passionate and dedicated to impacting lives!
We are considering a service dog for our 18 year old daughter who struggles with chronic illness that limits her mobility as well as with anxiety and depression. I love the idea that Medical Mutts turns shelter dogs into service dogs. All of my emails were answered promptly, and Jack spent close to an hour with me on the phone going over the process of applying, waiting for, paying for, and ultimately receiving a service dog in great detail. We have not made the commitment yet because of other medical expenses that our family has been faced with since I inquired, but it's still something we very much hope to pursue. If we lived closer to Medical Mutts we would definitely participate in their "help us walk our dogs in training" days!
I had taken my service dog Paeris to a few trainers before Medical Mutts, but she still wasn't fully trained in some aspects. Melissa has been amazing for us both. She has given me a new found confidence with Paeris and the skills necessary to train her in a positive way. Paeris is well on her way to learning new tasks and for the first time in her life, I feel like I am learning the tools to properly train her for lasting effects. Melissa is there for me every step of the way and has answered my many questions. She has always been very gentle and understanding when I make mistakes and she compassionately guides me in the right direction. I speak very highly of Melissa and my experience at Medical Mutts. I highly recommend their services to anyone seeking a service dog. This nonprofit has made a positive difference in my life and I support everything they stand for and practice.
We would like to thank Medical Mutts for the Service Dog Training received over the last 2 years. It has been quite the journey, the interaction with other Service Dogs in Training and their owners has been fun and assisted the process greatly. It has been beautiful to see how much Luna Ray has progressed from a young puppy to nearly an adult, a dog with sound temperament, confident, loving, wanting to serve and be with me on my journey. Medical Mutts provides a service that made it possible for me to afford and receive the necessary professional training so that I can leave the home and navigate life with more confidence and happiness. We would like to share our gratitude and encourage anyone who may be considering working with Medical Mutts to do so. Thank you for your work and for all the dogs and people you have helped . All our love, Katie and Luna Ray xox
Medical Mutts has been a life-saver. We live in Michigan and have been trying to find someone to help us with a service dog for our adult autistic daughter. Unfortunately, there aren't many agencies that help her "category of disability." I don't even remember how we heard about Medical Mutts, but we were ecstatic when we found they would work with us remotely to train our own dog. It has been a fabulous experience. Melissa meets with us remotely every week to help get us started on tasks for the week. She then sends detailed instructions that explain the entire process for each of the tasks we work on. Each week we evaluate our dog's progress and determine the next step(s). Melissa is very patient with me; some weeks life gets in the way and we don't get much done. She explains things very clearly and seems to be able to "read" our dog even remotely.
I wish we lived closer as I think we would move even faster in the training program if she actually did the training, but we are getting there and I can't say enough good about Melissa and the whole program.
Medical Mutts is a friendly, reliable source for service dogs, and your new partner. They helped me by giving step by step instructions, giving a new leash on life and a new companion for me. Charlie, the dog I will be getting, has been trained for many tasks and since the whole Covid thing happened and I don’t live in Indianapolis, they set up a zoom call for me and my family to see him in action. I can’t wait to meet my new partner and the Medical Mutts staff that helped and practically raised him. I could not recommend another place that is so forthright and all around perfect for service dog raising and training.
Medical Mutts is helping me train my psychiatric service dog and I have already learned so much in a few short weeks! The trainers are informative and helpful, and always answer questions. I can not recommend this program highly enough!
What a great organization! Nothing could be more exciting and worthwhile than saving a dog and having the opportunity to have a special bond with their new home. I've only worked with Medical Mutts a short amount of time, but the reward of working with such a great group is incalculable.
Medical Mutts is an awesome non profit organization. Jennifer, Melissa and their team are dedicated and passionate in their work. We are in the 3rd level of group training with our dog Luna. We are in the process of training her for our special needs great grandson.
Medical Mutts has actually trained two balance service dogs for me. My first one was a 4-year-old DEAF Dalmatian. Buster was the most amazing partner anyone could ask for. He interpreted every tip, every toe drag, every hip collapse and never once let me fall. Then the worst day of my life happened. My precious teammate died suddenly from an aggressive cancer. I was crushed and lost and embarrassed to have to start using my walker again. So the journey began again. Finding the perfect dog that’s the perfect size and the perfect temperament. Then one day a friend sent a picture to my phone of a 10-month old (hearing) Dalmatian sitting in the Humane Society for the SECOND time. They evaluated Nash and assured me he would be a good choice to follow in Buster’s footsteps. So Nash began his six months in their board and train program. There were times when I was simply amazed at some of the tasks they had trained him to do and there were times when I thought they were crazy for training this wild horse because I was ready to sell him to the Gypsies! But now he has officially graduated and gets to live with me so the bond is beginning to grow. For the first time I feel like I can move forward, both figuratively and literally. Thank you Medical Mutts for giving my life back to me.....again.
Medical Mutts has been amazing to both me and my dog!
I searched a lot to find out where to get a service dog trained. Every training place I spoke to said that Medical Mutts was the place to go!
We are still in training but about to start our last class.
Everyone here is wonderful at not only the training aspects but also the reasoning behind it. They make it very easy to understand what and why we are doing certain things.
I’ve also been able to reach out about behavior issues I’ve had and how to fix them. They are very willing to help! They want your dog to succeed!
I am very grateful for Medical Mutts and I highly recommend them to anyone who is need of a service dog.
We were able to adopt one of their rescues who wasn’t cut out to be a service dog. Her name is Aspen. We absolutely love her, and our German Shepherd does as well. I’ve never seen dogs connect so quickly as these two did. They’re inseparable now, and Aspen adds so much joy to our lives
I have had the pleasure of successfully completing all of the group courses offered by Medical Mutts (Level 1, 2, 3, and the public access course) with my service dog, Oliver. He just graduated from their program on June 20, 2020, meaning that throughout the courses he has passed the AKC Puppy Star test, AKC Canine Good Citizen test, AKC Urban Canine Good Citizen test, and the public access test.
I was originally going to get a service dog fully trained from an out of state organization, but decided last year that I wanted to owner train with the help of Medical Mutts instead. I am so grateful that I made this decision! It has been a fantastic bonding experience for my dog and me, plus I now know how to train things in order to keep up with his training throughout his career and add new tasks if needed. It's a lot of work, don't get me wrong, but personally I believe that it is worth all of the time and money.
Their pricing is fantastic and very reasonable. For all group courses combined, it costs $2,000 and that is spread out throughout the year. You cannot find a better price than that for so much training. Though they were group classes, I never once felt that we received less or inadequate attention and assistance. They are sure to keep an appropriate number of trainers available for the course depending on size, so it is not just one trainer teaching the session. With the coronavirus, we had to have the first half of our Level 3 (Advanced) course online via Zoom. Honestly, it was fantastic! We still got a lot of focused attention and assistance and I did not feel that we lost anything by having to adapt due to social distancing and the quarantine.
I have a bachelor of science in animal science with a minor in biology from Purdue University, so I am familiar with various aspects of animal behavior, health, nutrition, etc. With my knowledge and our first-hand experience, I fully support the training methods used by Medical Mutts. Their positive reinforcement methods and decision to not use prong, choker, or e-collars does work well if you, as the dog's trainer, put in the required time and effort. The reasoning and logic behind their training methods is all very solid and effective. They also have various ways to teach things for those dogs who may struggle with some things along the way.
They make themselves very available for help and advice, and I know that if Oliver and I run into any issues in the future that we will be able to come back and brush up on anything we may need help with or even train more tasks.
Overall, I am very pleased with our experiences with Medical Mutts and am very grateful to the trainers, especially Jenn and Melissa, for everything they have done and continue to do!
Medical Mutts staff have been great to work with. We did owner training classes, and they were more than helpful. I highly recommend MM if you are a person in need of a service dog. After completing all courses I feel very equipped to handle our dog (trained to help my daughter)! Thank you again!
I needed a diabetic alert dog. I was no longer able to feel the dangerous highs and lows. I researched many places who claimed to train diabetic alert dogs. I found less than reputable places and bad places and then I found Medical Mutts! I knew after a phone conversation with Jack and a video conference (Skype) with Jennifer, that this was the place for me. After saving and raising money for quite awhile I was ready to make the plunge. While on Skype with Jennifer I met Harley Quinn, a unique chihuahua rescue, She was going to graduate before I was able to get a dog so I just followed her on the website. I got an email from Eva at Medical Mutts asking me if I was still interested in Harley Quinn, she had become available about the time I was ready after all. Heck yes! So, I went to Indianapolis for a week of training with HQ and she became my girl! She was quick to do live alerts and has saved my life at least a hundred times in the two years I have had her. We have to train together often and ensure she stays on top of her game, My service dog does not let me down. And my trainer from Medical Mutts stays in contact with me often via text, email, and Skype. She was there for the transition at the beginning and she is always available to me to this day, when a new question comes up or anything I want to ask or review. I have never waited more than 24 hours for a response even though she is so very busy. Medical Mutts has been there for me and Harley Quinn and I could not ask for any more of them! I recommend them and brag about them any opportunity I get.
I now have a psychiatric service dog that is a life saver for me thanks to Medical Mutts. The staff there is great, they explain anything you need to know to you as well as let me watch some of the taring sessions before they found the dog for me. I surfer from bad repression and relay bad anxiety. Before I got my service dog from them i would not go anywhere or do anything even with my kids or wife, but now we go all kinds of places and do all kinds of things.
Me and my family are grateful for them and Sera has help me though so-much that I do not even know how to put in words. I can say this though i shire if i did not have her i would not be here today.
Medical Mutts brought me and my beautiful Emma together. I am a Type 1 diabetic for over 30 years who came to a point in my life when I could not longer feel highs or lows. For a diabetic that is a dangerous place to live from, not only for me but also for my family. Once I made my decision to obtain a diabetic alert dog I knew Medical Mutts was the one for me. A major decision was the fact they use shelter dogs and not pure breed dogs. We are a family that has only had "mutts" so the was a perfect choice.
The process of application, interviews and sharing with Jennifer the ins and out of our lives so that we would be matched with the right dog for us was easy. After meeting Emma for the first time until now Medical Mutts has always been there for all my questions and needs.
Emma has not only changed the landscape of my diabetes by giving me more stability in my blood sugars but also a security for my family that is priceless.
I am grateful to Medical Mutts for the service they provide.
I love this organization and our trainer Melissa. She has helped me to increase the number of services that my husband's service dog can provide to him including medical needs for him. This company is so compassionate about what they do and want you and your dog to be successful! Melissa even helped to identify services that we had not thought about that made it so much easier for us. Our dog loves the training and was always so excited to learn something new. The training is such a positive style. Everyone feels good! I highly recommend
Medical Mutts to everyone i know! They are absolutely wonderful!
Two years ago, my sister's beloved service companion died. As my sister was researching options for a new diabetic alert dog, she found Medical Mutts. Her 1 year old miniature golden retriever, and my sister, are now fully trained. I've seen the results, and they are amazing.
Medical Mutts is literally a life-saving organization.
Medical Mutts is wonderful. We had such a great experience finding the perfect dog for our daughter. Our Daughter, Moriah needed a seizure alert dog and we were paired with Fina!
Moriah was very anxious during the training. Her seizure activity increased because of the stress that she felt trying to bond with Fina and learn the commands. Jennifer and Jack were so patient with her (us) and helped us over every hurdle. We are so happy to say that Fina has been a part of our family for almost 4 years. Moriah and Fina are now the best team and seem to speak their own language. Fina not only alerts us of a seizure, she also comforts Moriah when she is anxious. We feel very blessed to be a part of the Medical Mutts family.
Medical Mutts is AMAZING at what they do! My daughter needed a service dog to help with a medical condition called POTS. We couldn’t afford to get a fully trained dog. But Medical Mutts has an amazing program where they teach you how to assist with part of the work of training and it saved us thousands of dollars! The staff were all so helpful in every way. Every person made us feel comfortable and ‘part of their family’. We were even able to do some of the final ‘tweaks’ in the training via FaceTime which saved us hours of driving time too. (We drove 2-1/2 hours each way for this training for about 40 weeks. It was entirely worth it. )
I cannot say enough good things about Medical Mutts. They changed my daughter’s life by helping us have a well trained service dog for her. And we feel like they trained us well to help her dog Ayla to be the best she can be. Thank you Medical Mutts!
I got my diabetes alert dog through Medical Mutts and they were so professional and helpful throughout the entire process. They were always available to answer questions and problem solve. I have had him for almost three years and he has been a life saver and also become part of our family.
My daughter is a Type I diabetic and she was fortunate to receive a Medically Mutts trained service dog. Liberty (Libby) was more than a blood sugar alert dog - she served as her best friend and chief comforter during her first year in college - giving her confidence in managing her blood sugars and constant love and companionship.
Medical Mutts has been an AMAZING experience. My dog has learned so much from our group classes. We also have done one-on-one training and the trainers are patient, knowledgeable, and go above and beyond.
Medical mutts has been an a wonderful experience and has changed my life for the better. Dublin my now fully trained epilepsy service dog has given me my life back because of medical mutts and their wonderful trainers and staff. I highly recommend them to anyone asking for help when needing a service dog!
My wife is a type 1 diabetic and when I met her she had a full-size Golden Retriever who we trained to serve as her Diabetes Alert Dog. After he died, we located a reputable breeder and purchased a Miniature Golden (Comfort) Retriever and hoped that we could work with a reputable organization to help train this puppy as a new Service Dog. Both the dog and Medical Mutts have turned out to be stellar choices. Our Journey has taken well to MM’s positive training methods, and altho not perfect at her alerting skills (no dog is ever perfect), it gives me peace of mind to know that my wife has a back up for her Continuous Glucose Monitor. In fact, our dog has even alerted to lows even before the CGM registered that my wife’s blood sugar was falling. The challenge of training a puppy was not easy for us, but Medical Mutts provided all the support and education we needed, and we are quite pleased with the outcome. The world of Service Dog training has it’s charlatans and it’s scammers, and it’s so gratifying that we found and were able to use the REAL thing — Medical Mutts delivered on it’s promises and by helping us appropriately train our DAD we feel more relaxed about managing the challenges of Type 1 diabetes.
Medical Mutts is amazing! We have a son with multiple disabilities and also has anxiety. We've been going to Medical Mutts for a year with our Goldendoodle and when we pull in to the parking lot he gets excited! They are very knowledgeable and professional Melissa is awesome. She really knows how to help train and is very patient and compassionate. Love how you can train at your own pace. We would definitely recommend Medical Mutts to anyone looking to have their dog trained for any disability!
Medical Mutts was wonderful! Our son was diagnosed almost 3yrs ago with Epilepsy. We decided to find a local, reputable business that offered classes that were affordable and successful with their training. Raina has had some issues with anxiety in public, however the trainers were GREAT to help us with her. She knows when “her boy” is about to have a seizure and let’s us know! The training is intense, but it’s so worth it! All of the trainers are DEDICATED to helping you and your dog to become successful!
I have used Medical Mutts for a variety of services. I bought a puppy and went with her to their self-training puppy class. And then I did the board and train with this same puppy since I was traveling a lot at that time and they took great care of her and continued with her training while I was traveling. She is now a little over a year and is a fantastic companion and Service Dog. She can alert to my low blood sugars (I'm a type 1 diabetic) and she can retrieve a bag of glucose tabs for me. We are working on her being able to retrieve my phone. Her public access manners are very good, and we are bonding tightly as a team. We are working on polishing her skills -- a Service Dog's training is never over and done as it's important to reinforce (daily!) the tasks they learn. Altho I didn't obtain one of their rescued dogs (I chose to get a specific breed of dog), I love that they get dogs from shelters to try to see if they can help them successfully become Service animals. I feel they emphasize the importance of learning about and knowing your dog and the way it communicates. I love that they use positive training methods. I cannot say enough good things about Medical Mutts. Their staff are knowledgeable and caring, good teachers of humans and canines, and are professional in their approach.
