Programs: Socal cyber cup challengesoec joined with organizations such as ndia, national university, leidos, and other sponsors to provide an opportunity to junior high and high school students within the southern california region to demonstrate their cybersecurity expertise. The challenge included practice rounds starting in dec. 2016, a qualification round in february, and finals in march 2017. Each team consisted of 5-8 team members. This challenge creates interest and awareness to students while encouraging them to consider information assurance and computer security as a possible career path. Students apply the theories and practical skills they have learned, and foster a spirit of teamwork, ethical behaviors, and effective communication. The top 8 teams from junior high and high school will be provided an opportunity to attend a week long training in june. The top teams were awarded a total of $19,000 in grants/scholarships depending on their placing in the finals challenge. Cyber boot campin its 8th year, soec was joined by industry leaders like general atomics, eset, and san diego gas & electric as they provided the top eight high school teams from the socal cyber cup challenge that was held in march, a weeklong cyber security training camp. Sessions included instruction, lab time, discussions, and industry speakers throughout the week. Snacks, lunches, and beverages were provided throughout the week. About 64 students, 2-5 speakers, and a staff of 10 attended the week-long event on a daily basis. Other activities included: - tours of general atomics campus and project areas. -members of the technical community were invited to join the students on the last day for an awards lunch to meet and become mentors for the students. -each student received a certificate of completion and a cyber sports themed jacket, polo shirts, business cards from the networking luncheon, and much more.
