Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Civil Rights, Lesbian & Gay Rights, LGBTQ

Mission: Equality California Institute's mission is to ensure and promote the dignity, safety, equality and civil rights of all LGBT Californians by (1) educating the public and the LGBT community as to the rights, protections, and responsibilities' as well as the inequalities' that currently exist under California law; (2) mobilizing activists throughout the state; and (3) building coalitions with local, state, and national groups in order to promote equality and understanding.

Programs: Marriage Equality Project EQCA's Marriage Equality Project is a grassroots effort devoted to securing civil marriage access for same-sex couples. With chapters covering the majority of California counties located throughout the state, we are working to empower and supports local activists - both gay and non-gay in the fight for legal equality for same-sex couples and their children through media visibility and public education within local communities. Transgender Equality Project In collaboration with the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the Transgender Law Project and numerous local organizations, EQCA has recently launched Transgender Equality California, a project designed to strengthen and expand the statewide network of transgender organizations and activists fighting for transgender visibility and equality. EQCA hosts monthly conference calls with transgender activists to work collaboratively in addressing priority issues within the transgender community and to organize public education and outreach to the LGB and non-LGB communities. Family Media Project The Family Media Project is actively collecting and compiling stories of same-sex couples from across the state and is entering their information into a searchable database for media and educational opportunities. Partnering with other organizations, EQCA is sponsoring media trainings with these and other families. During the summer of 2004, EQCA Intern Marina Gatto -- a high school student with two moms ? is collecting stories and pictures from children of gay parents that will be compiled into various media and released later this year.
