Mission: The organization works to upgrade the internet access in every public school classroom in america so that all students can take advantage of the promise of digital learning.
Programs: In 2016, we continued to execute phase three of our strategic plan, which is focused on accelerating upgrades to schools. In 2015, we built a database and developed a data cleaning methodology that provides us with an understanding of the network connectivity of schools across the country. That database has continued to allow us to undertake a number of activities in support of accelerating upgrades to schools. First, we published our second annual state of the states report that showed the growth in connectivity of schools across the nation - both at the state level and nationwide - from the baseline report in 2015. Second, we continued to grow our efforts to support engagements in a number of states, partnering with the governor and key leaders to understand the connectivity needs in their specific state and develop / implement strategies to address. Finally, we have continued to provide direct support to an increasing number of school districts to support them in connecting their schools to fiber optic infrastructure, procuring more bandwidth for their budget, and ensuring that they have functioning lan / wi-fi networks in their schools. The percentage of districts meeting the fcc's 100 kbps / student internet access goal increased from 30% in 2013 to 77% in 2015 to 88% in 2016 as a result, over 10. 4 million more students now have access to sufficient internet access to use technology in the classroom. Over 30 million more students have access since 2013 95% of schools now have a fiber optic connection, an increase from 88% in 2015 and 64% in 2013 the cost of internet access for k-12 schools had been reduced by 36% from $11 / mbps in 2015 to $7 / mbps in 2016. Costs were $22 / mpbs in 2013.
