Mission: To provide the opportunity for all people to develop a greater appreciation and awareness of the natural and historical resources of the area by encouraging their utilization of the facilities and programs established at eden mill on deer creek.
Programs: Canoe trips - may through september eden mill offers canoe trips to help acquaint paddlers with the natural surroundings on deer creek at eden mill. Exploration of the environment, both the land and the water, is enhanced by the use of canoes to travel along deer creek. During these relaxed excursions environmental education and interpretation is provided by the naturalist who accompanies the group. It is a quiet time of learning, exploration, and enjoying nature. There were 43 trips scheduled in 2017 which served 570 participants.
harford county public school environmental canoe trips - every school year, eden mill hosts harford county public school science teachers and their students on environmental canoe trips on deer creek at eden mill. The science teachers receive canoe safety training from one of our volunteers in order to use our fleet of canoes for an environmental education field trip. During the 2017 school year, there were 10 trips scheduled with 221 participants.
nature center visitation / grist mill tours - eden mill nature center is located in the historic eden mill grist mill buildings located at 1617 eden mill road in pylesville, md. The nature center area includes displays of animals of the piedmont region as well as live reptiles and amphibians. The center is set up for families to wander through and enjoy while learning about the lives and habitats of our local critters. The historic grist mill includes original equipment and educational displays that allow our visitors to gain a better understanding of the milling process. During 2017, 6,207 people visited the nature center & grist mill, with 2 guided grist mill tours conducted.
educational programs led by volunteers - eden mill volunteers offer a variety of educational programs for children of all ages and families. The programs usually include hands on experiences, crafts and a hike on the eden mill trails. Snakes, stream studies, rocks, plants, seeds, stars, wetlands and native americans are some of the program topics we have offered in the past. During 2017, the center offered 100 programs for 1,507 participants.
school field trips: these are environmental education field trips usually from harford county public schools, surrounding county public schools and some private schools. They consist of programs for wetland study, deer creek watershed study, animal study and other nature oriented programs. During 2017, there were 45 trips with 2,669 student participants.
