Causes: Health, Organ & Tissue Banks
Mission: Ids provides high quality organ and tissue procurement services to medical professionals in utah, southeastern idaho and western wyoming, and actively educates professionals and the public on the benefits of organ donation.
Programs: Organs transplanted and tissue recovered: kidney - 219, liver - 131, heart - 67, pancreas - 18, lung - 28, aorta & dta - 98, heart valves - 129, veins - 196, bones - 221, skin - 120, and organs for research - 22. Providing follow-up services for donor family members is a vital part of our mission. Our donor family services team work closely with donor families to provide follow-up support, referrals to support groups and bereavement education materials. We also provide a quarterly newsletter "heart to heart" specifically for donor families. The newsletter reaches over 3,600 families and provides articles about grief and mourning.
professional & public education - visited and/or contacted hospitals 444 times and made over 125 presentations to professionals. In 2017, ids made 897 visits, making over 1,500 presentations to junior and senior high schools in utah, idaho and wyoming, total, seeing 69,873 students. This is one of, if not the, most aggressive school programs in the country. In 2017, ids had 8 events throughout utah and idaho that received wide spread media coverage. Ids had a successful learning opportunity along with 3 of our hospital partners. We attended an alliance sponsored conference in tampa florida. The conference offered excellent plenary and break-out sessions with a focus on targeted physician communication. This was a great opportunity to develop strong and lasting relationships. Ids also works with many eagle scouts to help them earn their eagle badge. In 2017, we assisted 9 scouts that will typically canvas their neighborhood giving out information. This has been a great "grass roots" program to help educate the public about the need for donation.
on-line registry - the yes utah donor registry has 80% of people aged 16 and above registered as donors compared to 2010 census data, and idaho 64%. The registries are secure, on-line databases that provide legal documentation of a deceased organ and tissue donor's wishes. The national average for registries is 53%. Because the driver license offices in both states are so integral to what we do to get people registered, we made 86 visits to driver license offices to update staff about donation and questions they might be asked. We also meet with driver license leadership in both utah and idaho twice a year to keep them updated and seek their ideas as to how we can further deliver our message.
