Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Civil Rights, Community Coalitions, Homeless & Housing, Intergroup & Race Relations, Race

Mission: Diversity, Inc., created in 1982 as the Fair Housing Legal Action Committee (FHLAC), was formed as several forward-looking communities in Chicago Southland recognized the value of our region's diverse character. FHLAC leadership acknowledged the need to overcome prejudices and patterns of segregation that dominated the housing market. Diversity, Inc. is actively engaged in the creation and maintenance of social, economic, political and commercial conditions that foster the achievement of racially, ethnically, culturally and economically diverse residential environments. The organization works to eliminate discrimination in housing and related services, and we provide support to organizations that promote a unitary housing market. Diversity, Inc. provides technical assistance to local government in relation to issues of fair housing, fair lending, and racial and ethnic diversity. The organization has provided training on fair housing ordinances and administration, as well as human and community relations programs for local government and community organizations. Diversity, Inc. also advocates for the fair, equitable and just allocation of resources by governmental agencies, and the regulation of policies and practices that may rob our communities of their multi-racial, -ethnic and -cultural benefits through discrimination.
