Mission: Disability rights tennessee is a nonprofit legal services organization dedicated to protecting the rights of tennesseans with disabilities.
Programs: Drt is tennessee's protection and advocacy (p&a) system that resulted from federal legislation, the developmental disabilities assistance and bill of rights act of 1975. The act defines the p&a system as one that has the authority to pursue legal, administrative and other appropriate remedies to insure the protection of rights and advocate on behalf of those persons who have a developmental disability. Drt administers six p&a programs and client assistance program. Each of these programs has primary goals of protecting the civil rights of individuals with disabilities, although the specific disability or issue may be designated by the mandating act, and advocacy efforts to expand the abilities of those with disabilities to live productive, fulfilling lives. No individual or group receiving services is charged.
