Mission: Design outreach (do) is a christian humanitarian engineering nonprofit organization whose mission is to create life-sustaining solutions that alleviate global poverty. Do focuses on innovative products that improve the lives of the poor and provide better health, education and employment opportunities. Its flagship project is lifepump, an innovative hand pump designed to go deeper into the ground and last longer than standard pumps available today, providing a sustainable source of safe water for communities that desperately need it.
Programs: A main focus of design outreach is providing lifepumps to communities in sub-saharan africa and haiti. In 2017, do manufactured 20 new pumps, 12 of which were shipped to field partners in kenya and 8 to partners in haiti. Do also completed 27 installations-11 in mali, 9 in zambia, 4 in haiti, and 3 in ethiopia. In mali, do provided training to world vision mali personnel, wash managers, pump technicians, and government officials. The goal of the training program was to equip these individuals with the knowledge and expertise required to train local water committees to conduct preventive maintenance on lifepumps within their communities. As part of the lifepump program, do is actively working with governments in malawi and zambia to effect policy change that would make lifepump a national standard in those countries. In april 2017, do met with zambian government officials, world vision and additional stakeholders to discuss a government pilot program for which a memorandum of understanding was signed in october 2016. The do team also explored options for an in-country field office to expand operations in the country. In 2017, do also installed a lifepump at loughborough university in england as a demonstration for students, researchers and nongovernmental organization. Contributions of $95,324 received for this project.
a critical part of design outreach's mission is research and development of new appropriate technologies that can improve the lives of people living in developing countries. In 2017, do created prototypes of several new innovations, including lifepump150, lifetap, and a new remote sensor designed to track lifepump performance and use. The lifepump150 is a new lifepump version that reaches 150 meters, making it the deepest-reaching hand pump in the world. Do also developed a new self-closing valve designed to address water waste and hygiene issues associated with current valves that are used on community water access points such as cisterns, tap stands, and gravity-fed water systems.
