Causes: Adult Education, Education, Literacy, Remedial Reading & Encouragement
Mission: Responding to a crucial societal need, DePorres Place, members of the Dominican Rea Literacy Corporation, exist to empower adults by providing basic literacy and life skills through individualized tutoring in environments that respect and reverence individuals. We enable learners to transform their lives by acquiring skills to become successful parents, productive workers and responsible citizens. This mutual collaboration in adult literacy is a contemporary expression of the Adrian Dominican Sisters? commitment to education.
Programs: 1.Basic Adult Literacy. Volunteer tutors teach reading and writing to adults over the age of 18, who are out of school and reading below eighth grade level.2. Learning Disability Basic Literacy. For adults with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. 3. English for Speakers of Other Languages. (ESOL)Tutors work with individuals or small groups of adult immigrants to teach them conversational English, reading and writing skills. Pre-literacy to Intermediate English.4. Computer Learning Lab and Independent Study Program. Enrolled students practive reading, writing and speaking Enclish with a wide variety of Interactive computer programs.5. Conversation Sessions. Tutors and students frequently gather for conversation. Topics for discussion arise from the group. This gives students an opportunity to practice the English speaking skills in an informal, relaxed environment.
