Mission: Access to affordable, quality early care and education is critical for children to develop well and be ready for school. However, there is not enough high quality early care and education for children of the ?working poor? in the District of Columbia. 20% of young children in the city live in poverty. 62% of children have working parents. Currently, the city has about 1,500 children on the waiting list for child care subsidies. This number only accounts for families up to about 220% of the poverty level. Above that level are many hard working families that cannot afford to pay the high costs of quality child care. It is this segment of the population ? above the city subsidy level but far from able to afford market rates ? that DC Childcare is particularly interested in serving. In addition to affordability problems, families face problems finding quality child care. There are 360 licensed child care centers in DC. Only 87 of them are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Most of the downtown accredited centers are sponsored by the federal government primarily for federal employees; there are few spaces for the general working population and they are expensive.
Programs: Our annual gala, held each November, is an event called a ?Fun-Raiser for Kids?. It is held in conjunction with the DC Early Childhood Collaborative. The goal is to raise $250,000 each year for scholarships and operations. The corporate community enjoys interacting with clowns, playing with blocks, enjoying entertainment, and contributing to the well-being of our youngest citizens. Stars for Children awards are given out annually. In 2004, the Stars were Freddie Mac Foundation, Metro Washington Bankers, Mary Gill and Maurice Sykes.
