This league is an absolute disgrace. The referees are completely untrained, clueless, and downright incompetent. The league owner handpicks his teams to make himself look good, fooling those who don’t know any better about the game of basketball. Sure, it’s his business—but don’t lie and call this a “developmental league” when there’s ZERO development happening!
How can kids improve when the referees have no idea what they’re doing? They don’t even know what calls to make, and it’s blatantly obvious they’re too scared to call fouls against the owner’s team because, guess what? He’s their boss! This isn’t basketball. This is a joke.
Parents are paying hard-earned money expecting fair play, only to be met with bias, chaos, and a complete lack of integrity. There is NO fairness here. There is NO real competition. If you actually care about your child learning the game the right way—STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS LEAGUE!
An awful league that may have started off okay, but has since declined. Your child will be very frustrated with the inconsistent, condescending, and arrogant referees, awful lack of gym space, and horrifying management. If I could give this league 0 stars I would. Please do yourself and your child a favor and sign them up for any league besides this one. I recommend NJB and AAU. My child after playing a year at Cupertino Hoops wanted to stop playing basketball and as a matter of fact got WORSE. We enrolled him in AAU and since then has been playing much better and regained his confidence.
100% agree with the fellow reviewer thetruth1123: referees are awful--one would think that a youth basketball league is about developing young basketball talents. And especially for the refs, given their important role in the game. However, some refs in c-hoops have poor knowledge of basketball, minimal respect to the game and fairly biased. It is one thing to have poor knowledge--which might improve after learning--but bring your own inflated-ego to kids game is pathetic.
I started playing Cupertino Hoops in my 6th grade. From the first game, I knew that this league was a crappy league. First off, the refs are AWFUL. Inconsistent, barely know the game, ref unfairly and extremely biased. They think they are hot stuff and are on some power trip because they "know the game". These awful referees include Don, Dale, Chris, and Sharon. The only good referee here is Kyle (short asian dude). I don't know why I continued to play the rest of my middle school season since the league has gotten progressively worse in terms of reffing and also talent. I don't recommend it AT ALL. NJB, YMCA, AAU, SVBC, and CYS are all far superior leagues in terms of officiating, talent, coaches, and gym space. I plan on boycotting the league and spreading the word to, if possible, end it because it really is corrupt.
My daughter has been in this league for 3 years now. Its been a great opportunity for her to grow into a better player. She had no background in basketball. The coaches (all volunteers) are good and take the effort to teach. Also all players get equal playing time.
Its a great league to start learning.. for advanced players it may slow them down. However seen some great talent.
Cupertino Hoops basketball in Cupertino. I have had the unfortunate, misadventure of joining the basketball program for my 5th grader. We had played with the YMCA and NJB in previous years. We thought it would be a great experience to have my 5th grader play with her friends. The issues are:
1. Our team had to share a community gym with 3 other teams. The gym was smaller than a junior high gym and it did not have a covered area so the teams waiting to use gym after our practice would try to fit in the gym while our kids were practicing. There was not anywhere for them to stand except on the court. Literally, nowhere. So, our kids had to practice on a 1/4 court with other kids standing and walking through our court. Unbelievable.
2. Most of players were on the northern side of town and they gave us a court on the southern most part of town. Again, unbelievable. It was practice at 6pm with a 45 minute drive. We were given te choice to practice 8:30-9:30 at a closer location. 8:30 pm with 4/5 graders on a Monday night. Unbelievable.
3. They told us we would have this gym for only half the year, then we could have a better location after January. Nope, they did not change the practice schedule.
4. Games are allowed to be more violent than at the Y or NJB. The Refs allow a lot of pushing and hits. I was shocked.
5. They do not provide chairs or enough chairs for the players or coaches. We had to find out the hard way. We eventually bought a team bench which we used for the team and a chair for the coach since the coaches are not allowed to stand, yet they do not give chairs. Our coach was threaten to be kicked out of the gym if he did not sit in the stands or squat on the floor.
6. Game schedules are very slow to be released or changed (sometimes a few days before the game), but I don't think it's unusual. Some parents were upset, but I was not since this has happened in other organizations.
We and other members of the team will not be going back.
