Mission: The west side of Houston where The Country Playhouse has made its home since 1956, was initially out in the country, well away from the bustle of downtown a community unto itself. As Houston has grown, there has certainly been more crossover, more intermingling of diverse cultures and economic levels, but the sense of uniqueness has remained. Country Playhouse has become a hub of theatre arts for west Houston. There is a west Houston audience that wants to stay closer to home, that does not venture often into downtown and inner city venues. There are performing artists, some just beginning, some active amateurs, some retired or inactive professionals, who want to learn, practice or perfect their craft but who do not aspire to, or are not ready for, the small professional theatres and equity houses of inner-loop Houston. There are children and youth who live and go to school in west Houston - many want to learn about performance, about technical theatre and need constructive enrichment activities after school and on weekends. CPH has filled these needs while also taking its place as one of Houston's most visible performance venues for artists and audiences from every part of the city.
