Programs: The history of the convalescent hospital for children (chc) can be traced back over 120 years to 1883. Originally founded as a home for children orphaned by chlorea, the organization has evolved dramatically over the years. Chc was formally incorporated in its present form in 1972 and is the only facility in the ohio/kentucky/indiana region that is dedicated to children requiring long-term hospitalization due to debilitating injury or disease. The 40-bed inpatient facility at chc's main campus offers a wide range of therapeutic and rehabilitative services designed to address the needs of its patients and its families. In december 2002, chc opened its college hill facility approximately eight miles west of main campus. This facility includes inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services along with a residential treatment program that will allow more patients to stay in the local area to receive treatment versus being sent out of town. The facility has 48 staffed inpatient mental health beds and 33 staffed residential psychiatric beds. Medical services provided by chc include rehabilitation medicine, ventilator-dependent medicine and psychiatric medicine. In addition, a variety of social, spiritual, and recreational services are also provided to patients and families through the hospital's broad array of professional and voluntary staff. Chc is exempt from federal income taxes as a charitable organization under internal revenue code section 501(c)(3). Consistent with its charitable mission, chc maintains a policy of accepting all patients within its primary service area regardless of ability to pay. This primary service area includes the eight counties in southwestern ohio, northern kentucky, and southeastern indiana that geographically surround cincinnati.
