Causes: Art Museums, Arts & Culture
Mission: Camh's mission is to not only present the freshest and most innovative art of today, but to make that art accessible to the general public through its publications and a myriad of different educational and outreach programs. Each program is designed to make the ideas, themes and artists relatable to audiences by exploring the current issues and ideas that are relevant to our everyday lives. In order to encourage the broadest possible audience, all of camh's exhibitions and programs are presented free to the public.
Programs: Camh resources are dedicated to organizing, presenting, and touring exhibitions that showcase some of the most seminal art of today. These exhibitions are documented in publications designed for use by both scholars and the general public. Each exhibition is accompanied by educational and outreach programs that complement the exhibition and make the art on view more accessible to both experienced museum-goers and new audiences. As one of the nation's oldest non-collecting museums and one of houston's first major art institutions, camh plays a vital role in shaping the region's cultural community by showcasing work of regional artists and by bringing the works of national and international artists to the city. This past fiscal year, the museum featured six exhibitions with accompanying exhibition catalogues, had one exhibition on tour, and continued its art on the lawn series. In celebrating regional talent, camh continued its initiative to feature texas artists, including right here, right now: houston vol. 2. The museum balanced its celebration of the local with the presentation of a number of nationally and internationally acclaimed artists, including angel otero, paul ramirez jonas, jack early, and lily van der stokker. Our nationally acclaimed teen council also presented an exhibition, origins of the self. Total on-site and off-site attendance for these exhibitions as well as attendance from tour exhibitions totaled 173,326.
to further the museum's mission, the contemporary arts museum houston produces a series of education and outreach programs to encourage a greater understanding of contemporary art. These programs include public school outreach and tours, family events, scholarships, concerts, and lectures, including a distinguished artist lecture series. The education department hires students and local artists to work as tour guides and teachers for each exhibition. The museum's teen council, made up of area high school students, constructs small exhibits and programming relating to current exhibitions in the museum's cullen education resource center. This year camh has expanded its programs to include steam components (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics).
the museum shop at the contemporary arts museum houston offers a diverse and unique selection of books, periodicals, and exhibition catalogues, as well as a wide array of educational items, including artist-made jewelry and toys and games for children. The shop is a popular spot in the houston art scene and has a reputation for unique, fun, useful and just plain quirky gifts related to contemporary art.
