Causes: Financial Counseling, Human Services
Mission: Provide financial literacy programs that promote the stewardship of financial resources; provide financial crisis counseling on a low-cost/no-cost basis; and, serve as a community resource for financial counseling and education.
Programs: As an accredited member of the national foundation for credit counseling (nfcc), consumer debt counselors provides financial counseling and education to thousands of consumers each year in person, over the phone or online. During fy 2017, consumer debt counselors provided counseling to 2,988 clients. This process includes working with clients to assess their financial situation, develop a budget, set financial goals and create an action plan. Some of these clients who receive counseling additionally choose to enroll in a debt management program (dmp), which provides systematic repayment of certain debts. Additionally, some clients who received counseling additionally worked with consumer debt counselors to identify and implement their qualified solutions to deal with their student loan debt. Finally, many clients call with simple requests for information or to obtain referrals to other qualified agencies that can better assist them.
since 2012, consumer debt counselors has met hud's strict requirements to be a hud-certified agency in the state of florida. Our housing counselors work with individuals and families to assist them with a variety of housing challenges, from pre-purchase counseling to mortgage modification and foreclosure education/assistance. Florida homeowners who require temporary assistance to pay or catch up with their mortgage due to unavoidable loss of income can qualify for the florida hardest hit (fhh) program. Consumer debt counselors is an approved agency for fhh, and during fy 2017 assisted 3,114 clients with fhh applications. Another major housing focus is foreclosure prevention counseling. Our counselors work with both the client and the mortgage company to help the client remain in his or her home and to avoid both the cost and damage to their credit rating associated with foreclosure.
consumer debt counselors seeks to be a trusted and respected voice for consumer financial education and financial problem resolution in the communities that we serve. As part of this, another major focus for the agency is community outreach. Through its community outreach efforts, consumer debt counselors impacted 13,275 members of the community at large. Consumer debt counselors conducted many workshops for the public during the course of the year. During fy 2017, consumer debt counselors conducted a total of 7 workshops that served 3,041 people. This includes:- pre-purchase homebuyer workshops: 34 workshops; 1,020 attendees- rental housing workshops: 1 workshop; 24 total attendees- fair housing pre-purchase education workshops: 12 workshops; 300 attendees- predatory lending education workshops: 28 workshops; 1,020 attendees- resolving or preventing mortgage delinquency workshop: 5 workshops; 42 attendees- non-delinquency post-purchase workshops: 6 workshops; 40 attendees- financial, budgeting and credit rebuilding workshops; 17 workshops; 595 attendees
