Mission: To strengthen omaha neighborhoods by promoting the bicycle as viable, reliable, and fun transportation.
Programs: Our open shop program allows anyone to come and use our tools to fix their own bicycles. We provide five complete workbenches available for use during our open shop hours. Volunteer mechanics help participants learn how to make repairs on their own bikes. We ask participants to make what they deem to be a fair donation in exchange for any supplies (e. G. New tire tubes) used. During 2016, there were 464 adults and 163 youth who used open shop to repair a bike.
our earn-a-bike programs allow kids (ages 5-9), youth (ages 10-15), and adults (ages 16+) to earn bicycles in exchange for attending our classes (kids & youth) or volunteering hours (adults). Kids can attend four classes that introduce bike maintenance and safe riding concepts in exchange for a free bike and a free helmet. Youth can attend six classes that include instruction on basic bike maintenance, instruction on safe riding skills, and guided time fixing up a bike. After the six classes, youth may take home the bike they fixed up, along with a free lock, a free helmet, and a lot of new skills. Also part of the program, adults can volunteer 5-10 hours in order to select a bike to refurbish with the help of a volunteer mechanic. Adults participating in the earn-a-bike program are asked to pay a small fee to cover supplies to the extent they are able (financial assistance available). After overhauling the bike, adult participants get both a bike and the know-how to keep it rolling smoothly. In 2016, this program had 27 kid graduates, 81 youth graduates, and 48 adult graduates. The shop recorded 1,122 adult volunteer hours and 268 youth volunteer hours in the course of the year.
