I am a new board member of this organization. My husband and I have a 19-year-old nephew who is a recovering alcoholic. He is sober! But he is taking baby steps toward a college degree. We know through his struggles (in another state) how tough college life is for students who have drinking problems or addiction issues.

This collegiate recovery program is the closest thing I have in my area to do something to help others like him.

I started by chairing a fundraiser! Through that work, I visited the actual space where the kids gather and got to know them. They are incredible. I was nervous, but they really are like any other college students, except they can't and won't drink. They have already come through so much. We have two college age daughters of our own and we realize how "easy" their college lives have been by comparison.

At the fundraiser, two students were stunned to learn they had won $1000 in scholarships! They earned that by keeping up their grades and staying sober. The money meant so so much to them. Not only was it a reward, but please understand their families may have depleted any college savings by spending it on treatment programs. (My brother's family has spent more than $100,000 on inpatient and outpatient treatment programs literally across the country)

Anyway, the Collegiate Recovery Program provides a place for the kids to have 12-step meetings, to hang out, to have social events and to reach out to other kids who haven't quite made the commitment to join! It's a huge place of support. I like to take non alcoholic drinks to stock their fridge whenever I go there...give them a nice treat!

We need to raise money for more scholarships and to get more students with addiction issues to reach out to this group as a resource to help them. UNC Charlotte is a huge school and I am SURE there are students who could really use the friendly smiles and acceptance here...as they "find their way."
