Mission: The primary tax-exempt purpose of the cleveland va medical research and education foundation, a 501(c)(3) medical research foundation established in accordance with title 38, subchapter iv-research and education corporations, sections 7361-7368, is to support biomedical and clinical research as well as to provide health-related educational activities in conjunction with the louis stokes cleveland department of va medical center (vamc). Research sponsored by the cleveland va medical research and education foundation benefits veterans treated at the louis stokes cleveland vamc and the general public by advancing knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and disability. Education programs supported by the cleveland va medical research and education foundation help disseminate the results of research so they may be translated to clinical practice, provide hospital staff with training in the latest treatments, and help patients understand and manage their medical conditions.
Programs: "a phase 3, placebo-controlled, randomized, observer-blinded study to evaluate the efficacy, safety and tolerability of a clostridium difficle vaccine in adults 50 years of age and older" pfizer and the cleveland va medical research and education foundation are administering a research study which is evaluating a potential preventative treatment for clostridium difficile. Clostridium difficile is a type of bacteria that lives in the human intestines and is one of the most common causes of healthcare-related infections. The clinical research study is evaluating an investigational vaccine for safety and effectiveness in reducing the chance of getting clostridium difficile. Cleveland is the lead and coordinating site for a total of 18 va sites where this study is taking place.
"development of a personalized model for pressure ulcer prevention acutely following spinal cord injury: biomarkers of muscle composition and resilience" usamraa dod the cleveland va medical research and education foundation administered a research study which will establish an initial model of biomarkers for pressure ulcer development risk. This will provide clinicians with a tool to improve identification of the higher risk patients with an acute spinal cord injury (scg) before the first pressure ulcer develops. This tool will allow for the patients to be provided with the most appropriate pressure relief management. Development of a pressure ulcer soon after suffering a sci has a devastating impact on the progress of initial rehabilitation. Pressure ulcer development will slow down or even stop the progress of this essential rehabilitation.
"miniaturized dielectric coagulometry for monitoring anticoagulation (clotchip and tsoacs)" the cleveland va medical research and education foundation administered a research study whose purpose is to test the effectiveness of the clotchip device, a portable and point of contact device used to monitor a patient's coagulation status. The management of patients on anticoagulation therapy requires time-critical decisions, this device could provide quicker results than traditional methods. This project has three main objectives and is taking place at two sites with lscdvamc being the main site.
