Mission: The mission of The Clarence Foundation is to promote engaged international philanthropy by catalyzing globally focused giving circles. We offer an accessible vehicle for donors to begin taking action on international issues. Despite growing interest in global issues, rates of international philanthropic giving in the U.S. remain extremely low. Many Americans want to help alleviate conditions of severe poverty overseas. Yet, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of global problems, making it difficult to know how or where to begin. In addition, many prospective donors remain skeptical that contributions overseas will reach their intended recipients due to concerns about accountability. Giving circles provide the direct personal connection and group support needed to overcome these barriers. Giving circles enable donors to learn together, pool their resources and have direct person-to-person contact with change agents overseas. They provide great leverage for the individual donor as well as a supportive group structure that is fun and socially engaging.
Programs: The Clarence Foundation's main activity is our global giving circle program. We organize groups of donors who pool their time, talent and resources and work together on the process of making international grants. The program combines donor learning with a hands-on group grantmaking experience. In addition to our giving circle programs, The Clarence Foundation operates a small grantmaking program to support social change agents overseas as directed by our participating donors.
