Mission: Teaching principles and practices of democracy to teachers and students in k-12 classrooms.
Programs: Teacher support: includes the "oregon civics conference" for teachers, held at the state capitol building in salem, drawing educators from around the state of oregon. The organization also provides private consultations and professional development for educators, attorneys, and others who wish to have lessons ranging from civics for kindergartners, to the constitution for advanced placement high school classes.
other student activities includes the courthouse experience program, which provides students in grades 5-12 with an authentic opportunity to learn about the justice system by observing real cases and court procedures. Each year nearly 6,000 students watch the law come alive on these enriching and valuable visits to the multnomah county courthouse and the justice center. Law day is a one-day conference for high school students held at portland state university, featuring workshops on legal issues concerning youth with participation by approximately 500 students. Law students from lewis & clark law school have been teaching street law in local high schools for almost 30 years, covering a wide range of issues and emphasis on the very real ways in which the law applies to our everyday lives.
education programs includes we the people competition that brings together high school students from around the state of oregon to test their knowledge of constitutional issues in a congressional hearing type setting. Also included is project citizen, which is a curriculum for grades 5-12.
