Mission: Each year, on the last Saturday of April (National Rebuilding Day) Christmas in April * Diablo Valley mobilizes local businesses, community groups and more than 800 volunteers to transform the homes and lives of our low-income elderly and handicapped neighbors, so they can live independently in safety and warmth in their own homes. Not only is the home renovated on Rebuilding Day, but, so are the volunteers feelings of community pride. Working together with the homeowner, if possible, the group is able to positively effect change in their neighborhood.
Programs: Christmas in April * Diablo Valley s primary goal is to enable low-income elderly and disabled community members to live in safety, warmth and independence in their own homes. Ancillary benefits of the program are increased community awareness of the problem, increased community participation in the solution and the improvement of the Diablo Valley s neighborhoods. The outcome objectives of National Rebuilding Day are: (1) to mobilize resources from the local community to renovate the homes of low-income, elderly and disabled individuals and local non-profit organizations, (2) coordinate and increase community involvement in a cost effective manner, (3) build community pride and improve local neighborhoods.
The well-being of the homeowner is evident. Past recipients have been able maintain the repairs made to their houses on Rebuilding Day and take great pride in their new and improved home. Often the renovations have a contagious effect: neighbors notice a new coat of paint on the house next door and they decide their house could use some repairs as well. Community pride is another benefit of the program. The volunteers who do the work are able to take pride in their volunteer efforts and return the next year to help out those in need again.
