Causes: Arts & Culture, Children's Museums
Mission: The children's museum of richmond, a not-for-profit organization, exists to create innovative learning experiences for all children and those who support them that inspire the next generation of creative problem solvers.
Programs: Since 1981, the children's museum of richmond (cmor) has provided interactive programs, exhibits, and services for families that integrate early childhood development, parent/family education, and literacy. Some of the museum's greatest impacts in the past year include: access to services: the museum operates four locations and serves over 400,000 family members annually. The "access for all" program allows families who have annual incomes of less than 35,000 to visit for free or reduced admission - 33% of non-member visitors and 68% of the 26,527 field trip guests received assistance from the program. Family learning and engagement: commonwealth parenting (powered by cmor) offered whole family learning and parenting education opportunities to 375 individuals within the museums and through outreach initiatives with other nonprofit partners. Literacy: over 18,000 books were distributed last year to children in under-resourced communities through the central virginia children's book bank (powered by cmor). Early learning, steam and school readiness: programs are aligned with state and national standards that incorporate hands-on learning and promote kindergarten readiness, reading programs and parent/caregiver roles in preparing and supporting children's success in school. Special needs: special needs families receive tailored programming at no cost and include the museum's special night for special needs where those families were invited to a free, exclusive evening once a month. Community: cmor hosted 24 events highlighting culture and diversity in the community. Legendary santa is a program with a long tradition of offering to the community access (at no cost) to a treasured holiday experience with over 25,000 visitors attending each year.
the children's museum of richmond works and collaborates very directly with several nonprofits to not only deliver services, but aid in the design of programs, to prioritize the types of services needed and to connect with the individual families out in the communities. Key partners include: ywca of richmond, smart beginnings rva & rappahannock, family lifeline, partnership for families, literacy collaborative action network, children's hospital of richmond, and virginia commonwealth university.
