Mission: Chaya (the Sanskrit word for 'shelter' or 'shade') was established in 1996 by a group of South Asian women who were receiving calls in their individual capacities to help other South Asian women experiencing domestic violence. Chaya's mission is to serve South Asian women in crisis, and to ultimately end domestic violence by mobilizing South Asians to address domestic violence issues in their communities. (South Asia refers to Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Tibet.) While there are excellent organizations serving Southeast Asian and African women experiencing domestic violence, Chaya is the only organization in King County serving the South Asian community. Before Chaya's existence, many South Asian women experiencing domestic violence did not utilize existing mainstream services because of cultural and language barriers. Chaya's strength as an organization led and staffed by South Asian women is that we are able to bridge many of the cultural barriers and quickly establish trust with our clients and the communities we serve.
