Mission: Assist people who are blind or visually impaired to achieve their highest levels of independence.
Programs: Central industries: central industries is the manufacturing and service employment division of the central association for the blind and visually impaired (cabvi). This division employs 186 people in an integrated work setting comprised of 105 blind or visually impaired and 81 sighted individuals. Daily tasks include, but are not limited to, packaging, machine operation, data entry, customer service and assembly. Employees receive competitive wages and good benefits like retirement savings, health insurance and paid vacation. The products and services produced are sold to the state and federal governments through the preferred source and ability one programs.
rehabilitation: during 2017, the rehabilitation services division of cabvi helped 1,664 individuals live more independently and safely. Services are provided in eight counties in central ny and includes orientation and mobility training to help people move through their environment safely and technology training to learn the latest computer software available to blind individuals. Services include social casework to help people accept and deal with their blindness and low vision exams to identify adaptive devices that can improve any remaining sight. Vocational training is available to help blind people find meaningful jobs. Cabvi also has a growing adaptive sports and recreation program for blind and visually impaired individuals of all ages, which can improve a person's quality of life.
base supply centers: in 2017 cabvi operated six base supply centers (bsc's) on military installations in the north east. These office supply stores sell products to military personnel under a contract with the department of defense. Many of the products sold are those made by cabvi and other organizations who employ disabled persons from all over the country.
