Mission: The mission of the center for education, imagination and the natural world is to bring to life a new vision of the relationship between the inner life of the child and the beauty, wonder, and intimacy of the universe.
Programs: Public education and outreach. The "chrysalis" newsletter, published biannually, is a forum where thoughts on the relationship between the inner life of the child and the natural world are exchanged, as well as a vehicle for making center programs visible to the general public. Approximately 500 copies of the newsletter were distributed in fy17. The center also published an emergence series of 3 books related to the human-earth relationship in fy16 which continued to be purchased through amazon. Com during fy17.
school & group programs - the center hosts one-day programs (awakening to nature) for schools and/or groups of children, with the hope of bringing the inner lives of children into a new relationship with the beauty, wonder and intimacy of the natural world. Number of one-day sessions: 21; total adult attendance: 78; total child attendance: 504the center also held day-long programs (poetry of nature) in which groups of children are led on earth sanctuary trails, hear poetry read at special sites, and ultimately are invited to write poems of their own, which they share with one another after lunch. Number of one-day sessions: 6; total adult attendance: 18; total child attendance: 93 the center also held day long programs (empathetic listening) in which children engaged in a practice of deep listening to each other and to the natural world. The program begins with an introduction to empathetic listening, a way of listening that creates mutual understanding, trust and respect. During the second half of the program, the children are invited to listen deeply to the natural world during a solo writing time in their own special sit spot within a beautiful earth sanctuary. thomas berry summer program for children - the center offers two four-day summer programs that provide an opportunity for a small group of children to make a deep personal connection to the natural world. Number of program days: 8; total child attendance: 112
adult programs - the center hosts the inner life of the child in nature, an intensive two-year co-research for educators interested in nurturing the interior life of the child and young adult in relationship to the natural world. special design - in the fall of 2004, the center initiated special design programs for schools and groups. Through programs tailored to the needs of a particular learning community, the center has created a wide range of special design programs for schools, churches, and universities that bring children, young adults and educators into a deep personal connection to the natural world. These programs offer many possibilities for educators to partner with the center in creating a compassionate human presence to the earth. programs for families - the center hosts a one-day program (families of the forest) in which children and their parents are guided in natural play and exploration in the forests, fields and creeks of timberlake farm earth sanctuary, unhurried by the pressures of time.
